King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands had one of his most talked-about public appearances of the week, coming face to face with a stunningly accurate stand-in for Queen Máxima. Royal families are no strangers to wax figures and museum tributes of their members, but this unexpected encounter caught the king completely off guard: rather than a static replica, it was a living, breathing person costumed as the Queen, resulting in a hilarious encounter that left behind some charming photos in an otherwise formal royal visit.

The moment unfolded at one of Willem-Alexander’s most high-profile engagements of the week: the reopening of Museumpark VONK, a historic site that houses more than 10,000 years of history, craftsmanship and innovation from Eindhoven and the surrounding region. Rather than sticking to the strict protocol the Dutch royal house typically observes, the day took a lighthearted turn when a drag queen showed up mimicking Queen Máxima’s every movement with uncanny precision, right down to her signature poise.

After the museum’s reopening, the king toured the newly renovated space corner by corner, pausing at one point to share some heartfelt words about King Harald V, who died on August 28.

Then Willem-Alexander crossed paths with the talented impersonator who had faithfully recreated Queen Máxima, one of the most closely watched style icons in the royal world, accessorized with a diamond and pearl brooch, a wide-brimmed hat, and an all-white outfit. The drag queen’s appearance delighted Willem-Alexander and everyone else in attendance, who marveled at how well the impersonation came together.

The moment also lands against the backdrop of one of Queen Máxima’s own recent milestones. She made history this year as the first reigning queen to open a WorldPride celebration.

On September 9, most of Europe’s royal houses will gather in Norway for King Harald V’s state funeral. Denmark’s Queen Mary has already moved royal watchers with her own tribute to the late monarch, and the Dutch king added his voice hours later, addressing King Haakon of Norway’s father directly: “He taught me that you should take your office and your responsibilities very seriously, but not yourself. It’s a life lesson I apply every day.”

“I will miss him, Norway will miss him, and the world will miss him. I am deeply grateful to have enjoyed his friendship for so long,” the Dutch sovereign said of the late king, whom Queen Mary also remembered as “Norway’s grandfather,” a nickname earned through the deep warmth and affection he inspired across the country.
