Adria Arjona is officially entering the new DC Universe. The actress has landed a major role in ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow,’ the highly anticipated sequel directed by James Gunn.
While early speculation had fans wondering if she could be playing Wonder Woman, reports now confirm she will portray a very different and equally powerful character.
Despite widespread fan theories, Arjona is not taking on the role of Wonder Woman. Instead, she will play Maxima, a formidable alien queen from the planet Almerac.
In DC Comics lore, Maxima is a complex figure, at times a villain, a conqueror, a Justice League ally, and even a potential romantic interest for Superman. Her inclusion suggests a storyline that leans heavily into cosmic stakes and morally gray alliances.
The role was highly competitive. Arjona reportedly secured the part after testing alongside finalists like Sydney Chandler, Eva De Dominici, and Grace Van Patten during auditions held in Atlanta.
Interestingly, some early reports described her role as “mysterious,” which helped fuel speculation about Wonder Woman. “Man of Tomorrow” will once again follow Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
This time, however, the iconic enemies are forced into an uneasy alliance to confront a far greater threat. Brainiac, the hyper-intelligent villain played by Lars Eidinger.
The film will also see the return of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, alongside a wider ensemble that continues to build out Gunn’s interconnected DCU.
The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, with production set to begin in Atlanta.
Why fans thought she could be Wonder Woman:
Casting speculation around Arjona had been building for months. Fans frequently pointed to her as an ideal Wonder Woman, and even Gunn had publicly agreed she would be a great fit for the role.
That, combined with vague casting descriptions and secrecy around the project, led to widespread theories that she could be debuting as Diana Prince.
Instead, her casting as Maxima puts her at the center of a different kind of power dynamic, one that could challenge Superman in unexpected ways.
A major moment for Arjona:
Arjona’s casting marks a significant step in her career, following standout roles in ‘Andor’ and films like ‘Hit Man.’
She’s also set to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in the upcoming remake of ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ further cementing her rise as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents.
Off-screen, her connection to the DCU is also notable. Her partner, Jason Momoa, is set to play Lobo in the upcoming “Supergirl” film after previously portraying Aquaman.
