Marius Borg Høiby loses his bid for freedom — as his siblings step into new chapters of their own

The verdict was delivered this week: the Borgarting Court of Appeal rejected the appeal that Marius Borg Høiby’s legal team filed against an order keeping him under electronically monitored detention at Skaugum, the royal estate.

Borg’s attorneys had pushed for a considerably lighter ruling — release under an omvendt voldsalarm, Norway’s reverse restraining-order system, which would have swapped confinement for movement restrictions barring him from certain areas. The appellate court wasn’t persuaded. Judges found too great a likelihood that Borg would reoffend if the current arrangement were loosened, and left the district court’s original terms fully intact.

It’s a defeat that lands him right back where he’s been for months — tagged and confined to Skaugum, once again at the center of a legal saga that shows no sign of resolution. Borg, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who had been taken into pretrial custody in February ahead of a trial covering roughly 30 separate charges. He was convicted in June and sentenced to four years in prison, a conviction that remains under appeal.

Borg’s siblings are moving forward

While Borg’s world has narrowed to the grounds of a royal estate, his half-siblings are moving in the opposite direction.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, second in line to the throne, recently returned home from the University of Sydney, where she’d been pursuing her studies, after her mother’s pulmonary fibrosis took a serious turn for the worse. Rather than resume her degree from abroad, Ingrid Alexandra has enrolled at the University of Oslo, opting to stay close to family.

Prince Sverre Magnus, meanwhile, is headed the other way entirely. The palace confirmed that Haakon and Mette-Marit’s younger son will begin a degree in business administration at Forward College this fall — a program that, by design, never stays in one place. His coursework will carry him through three countries in three years: starting in Portugal, moving on to France, and finishing in Germany. 

It’s a striking counterpoint to his brother’s circumstances, marking the moment Sverre Magnus steps furthest yet from the family orbit just as that family faces one of its most scrutinized periods in decades.

Between a courtroom defeat, a homecoming, and a farewell, the House of Norway finds itself living out three very different storylines under one crown — proof that even for a monarchy, some summers refuse to settle.
