Donald Trump has revealed the chilling moment Melania Trump realised something was terribly wrong, as gunshots rang out during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Speaking at a press briefing in the West Wing less than an hour after the incident, the President described the confusion and fear that unfolded inside the Washington Hilton ballroom.
“It’s always shocking when something like this happens,” he said, recalling how the couple were seated side by side when the first noise was heard. “The first lady on my right, and I heard a noise… I kinda thought it was a tray going down.”
Within seconds, the atmosphere inside the packed dining room shifted dramatically as several shots rang out, sending guests scrambling under tables for cover. While some attendees ducked immediately, others hesitated, trying to make sense of the sound.
“It was a gun and some people understood that pretty quickly and other people didn’t,” Trump said. “I was watching to see what was happening.”

“Melania was cognizant of what happened and I think she knew,” he explained, later adding that she recognised it as a “bad noise”, a moment he described as “a rather traumatic experience for her.”

Guests watched in shock as security swept through the room, moving quickly to secure senior officials. Footage shows agents reaching the President and pulling him to safety, with Trump briefly appearing to slip as he was ushered away before regaining his footing.
© Getty Images“It was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and got into an area,” he said, praising the rapid response. “The performance of the Secret Service and the police, all of law enforcement, was very good.”
The DC Metropolitan Police Department later confirmed that the suspected shooter, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, had been a guest at the Hilton hotel where the event was taking place. Investigations into how the suspect was able to get so close to the ballroom are ongoing.
Despite the shocking interruption, Trump struck a defiant tone, insisting the annual event will go ahead at a later date.
“We’re going to be doing one hopefully within the next 30 days,” he said, noting he had been preparing remarks for the evening. “I was all set to really rip some of the journalists in the room… this would be the most inappropriate speech.”

“The first lady was doing a terrific job. She loves the country. She recognises it better than any,” he said. “But she told me numerous times… ‘you are in a dangerous job.’”
