Nicole Richie and her daughter, Kate Madden, looked like twins as they stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere of Stop! That! Train! on Monday, alongside a slew of celebrities like Tom Daley and RuPaul.
While Nicole opted to wear a full-length navy-and-white polka-dot dress with a matching headscarf and a white fur coat for the event, her daughter arrived in a strapless black minidress with knee-high boots and dainty jewelery.
She wore her long dark locks down to her waist and added dark eye makeup to complete the look. Nicole and Kate’s rare appearance was the first time the duo had graced the red carpet together since April 2024, when they were joined by Nicole’s husband, Joel Madden, and their son, Sparrow, at a film premiere.
The 18-year-old has been slowly coming out of her shell and sharing insight into her life with fans on social media, including a recent post about her Coachella trip. Just like her mother, Kate is incredibly independent and chose to forgo her birth name, Harlow, from an early age.
“She’s been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade,” Joel explained on the Dumb Blonde podcast. “She chose it. She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher’s like, ‘Kate’s doing great. She’s so nice.‘“
“We’re like, ‘Who’s Kate?‘ And they’re like, ‘Your daughter, Kate. That’s what she said her name was.‘“
© Variety via Getty ImagesHe continued: “We went home. We’re like, ‘You go by Kate at school?‘ She goes, ‘Yeah, I like it.‘ And we were like, ‘Okay, great.‘” The Good Charlotte rocker added that her name was a good litmus test for who really knows her.

“Everyone who knows her calls her Kate,” he said. “If you’ve known her since she was seven, she’s been Kate.“
Nicole and Kate are incredibly close, and the fashion designer shared on Today that teenagerhood is her “favorite stage” to parent. “I just so clearly remember being 16 that it’s actually surprising how quickly I can go back there,” she said. “When my daughter’s telling me drama with her friends, I go, ‘I remember. Laila Heckmath did that to me,‘ I remember first and last names, so it’s fun. It’s wild. And just the best.“

“And I’ve actually found freedom in that. I didn’t want my kids having some big discovery about me. And I’ve always been very open and honest with my kids and hope that they are open and honest with me.“
