Monaco paid tribute to the late King Harald V of Norway on September 9, the day of his funeral in Oslo.

The footage showed a member of Monaco’s Carabiniers du Prince in ceremonial uniform carrying the principality’s standard, offering a striking visual tribute as members of Europe’s royal families gathered in the Norwegian capital to remember the late King.

A royal farewell beyond Norway:

The gesture from Monaco underscored how Harald’s death has resonated well beyond his homeland. During his decades on the throne, the Norwegian monarch shared the European royal stage with generations of kings, queens, princes and princesses, including Monaco’s reigning sovereign, Prince Albert II.

The Monegasque tribute came as Norway observed one of the most significant royal occasions in its recent history. King Harald’s funeral was held at Oslo Cathedral on September 9, bringing together his family, representatives of European royal houses and dignitaries to honor his life and reign.

For Monaco, the Palace’s understated tribute allowed the principality to participate symbolically in the farewell taking place hundreds of miles away.

The tribute also reflected the close-knit nature of Europe’s royal houses, which have come together following Harald’s death to support Norway’s royal family during a historic transition.

King Harald died on August 28 at the age of 89 following a period of declining health. His death brought an end to a reign that began in 1991 and ushered in a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy.
