King Frederik and Queen Mary reunited with their 19-year-old daughter at the Guard Hussar Regiment’s barracks in Slagelse on Sunday, September 13. Crown Prince Christian, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine also joined their parents for the special family day, giving royal watchers a rare glimpse of the siblings together in Isabella’s new surroundings.

The Danish Royal House released a series of intimate photographs from the visit, including one of Frederik planting a kiss on his daughter’s cheek. Another captured Queen Mary affectionately wrapping an arm around Isabella as they walked together, while Christian greeted his younger sister with a warm embrace.

Frederik appeared especially at home during the visit, wearing military fatigues as he proudly approached Isabella on the grounds of the barracks. The father and daughter were pictured together in uniform, highlighting the family’s longstanding connection to Denmark’s Armed Forces.

The King began his own military education in 1986 and later served as a platoon commander with the Guard Hussar Regiment in 1988. Christian also completed his national service with the same regiment before beginning officer training in August 2025. He was appointed second lieutenant in June 2026.

A glimpse inside Isabella’s new chapter:

The visiting day allowed the families of the regiment’s recruits to enter the barracks and see their loved ones’ new routines firsthand. According to the Royal House, Frederik, Mary and their children were able to experience Isabella’s new environment and meet some of the recruits serving alongside her.

Isabella looked confident as she led her family around the grounds in camouflage fatigues, combat boots and a black beret. Her hair was styled in a practical braid, completing the dramatic transformation from the glamorous gowns and formal attire usually associated with her royal appearances.

The images also revealed a more relaxed side of the family. Away from official ceremonies and palace protocol, Frederik and Mary appeared simply as proud parents visiting their daughter, while Isabella’s siblings were visibly happy to see her after several weeks apart.

The reunion came shortly after the family traveled to Oslo for King Harald V’s state funeral. Isabella did not accompany her parents and older brother to the solemn royal gathering, as she remained focused on her military commitment.

Making history in Denmark:

She is among the first young Danes to undertake the country’s newly expanded 11-month national-service program.

The updated system extended service from four months and introduced equal conscription conditions for men and women as Denmark strengthens its military preparedness. Approximately 1,600 recruits began the new program in August.

Their service is structured around five months of basic training followed by six months of operational duties, allowing recruits to receive more specialized preparation than under the previous model.

Isabella is serving under the same operational conditions as the other recruits, although the palace previously confirmed that she would not receive the salary and food allowance normally provided during military service. Her expenses will instead be covered through her parents’ royal household budget.

The experience marks a striking new chapter for the King and Queen’s eldest daughter, who graduated from Øregård Gymnasium earlier this year. For now, royal gowns and palace engagements have been replaced by camouflage, early mornings and the demanding routine of military life, with her family proudly supporting her every step of the way.
