Prince George‘s godfather has revealed how his new school has “changed for the better” in recent years.

Speaking on HELLO!‘s A Right Royal Podcast, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton discussed all the ways that Eton College helps its students to excel.

Jamie, who attended Eton himself, said: “It’s probably changed a lot since I went. Actually, it certainly has. And in many ways, it’s changed for the better.

“My son was there too, so I’ve seen it quite recently. You’re very, very privileged to go there and there are all sorts of amazing things you can do.”

He continued: “The Drawing School, for instance, at Eton, is just sensational. That’s the name of the art department, as it were.

“And you can do anything you want. And they have these amazing societies – debating societies, history of art societies, where incredible people come down. Now that is a real privilege.”

Watch HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast below for the full interview with Jamie.

Jamie was once Queen Mother’s equerry before going on to serve as principal private secretary to Prince William and Prince Harry. He later helped Kate, now the Princess of Wales, shape her royal role.

He’s also the author of a new book, Beyond the Edge of Light, a tale of wartime romance, spying, and heartbreaking choices.

How Prince George can make the most of his time at Eton

When George, 12, attends Eton College in September, he will be following in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, who attended the Berkshire institution from 1995 to 2000.

The school, which costs £63,298 a year, has educated no fewer than 20 British Prime Ministers, and, says Jamie, is a “privilege” to attend.

This means that George will need to “pay back” and “not waste” the opportunity, he warned.

He told HELLO!: “I’m not saying this to lecture poor old George, but I’m saying if anybody goes to that sort of place, then you’ve got to take the opportunity to live it.

“And actually, dare I say, you’ve got to then realise how lucky you’ve been, and you’ve got to pay back in some way.

“Whether it’s through public service, the military or whatever, you’ve got to pay back. But it is a great privilege, and you don’t want to waste it.”

Prince William and Kate’s loyal confidante

Jamie, a close confidante of Prince William and Kate, was even entrusted to run their royal wedding in 2011.

He reunited with the Princess in 2025, sharing a warm greeting with her as she arrived at Sudbury Silk Mills in Suffolk to celebrate the work of textile manufacturers.

The Eton-educated author had a long-time relationship with the royal family even before working closely with the Waleses.

The former SAS soldier served as equerry to the Queen Mother from 1984 to 1986, assisting in the care of her beloved horses, and was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 2013.

He was “hauled out of retirement” in 2023 for King Charles’s coronation, when he looked after his godson George and all the pages for the week.
