Prince George is preparing for one of the biggest changes of his young life. Just weeks before he is expected to leave Windsor and begin boarding at Eton College, the 13-year-old joined Prince William, Kate Middleton, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for a rare family outing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The appearance stood out not only because all five members of the Wales family were together, but also because of its timing. With George about to enter a new chapter, the outing offered a rare glimpse of the family enjoying time together before their day-to-day routine changes.

William and Kate attended the netball semifinals at the OVO Hydro on Saturday, Aug. 1, where the family watched Jamaica face Australia. Although the Prince and Princess of Wales had already been expected at the event, the arrival of George, Charlotte and Louis turned the engagement into one of the family’s most closely watched public appearances of the year.

It is already uncommon for the Prince and Princess of Wales to attend public sporting events with all three of their children. Their last public appearance as a family of five came during Trooping the Colour in mid-June, making the Glasgow outing another rare glimpse into their family life before George begins boarding school.

During the match, George, Charlotte and Louis appeared relaxed and engaged, chatting with one another and following the action on the court. William was seen discussing the game with his children, while Charlotte frequently turned to speak with her mother. Louis, meanwhile, once again stole the spotlight with his trademark animated expressions, delighting spectators with his playful reactions.

Kate and Charlotte also shared a memorable fan moment. Mother and daughter posed for photos with members of Scotland’s national netball team, who were seated nearby in the stands at the OVO Hydro.

A Strong Royal Presence at the Commonwealth Games

The Wales family’s appearance was part of a broader royal showing throughout the Commonwealth Games.

Before the competition began, William and Kate met with members of Team Wales and their families. Earlier that same day, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and vice patron of Commonwealth Sport, visited athletes alongside his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

Edward and Sophie had already attended several events during the Games. On Thursday, July 30, they joined Princess Anne for the hurdles, triple jump and decathlon competitions.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla also played a prominent role, presiding over the opening ceremony on July 23. The Commonwealth Games are held every four years.

The Glasgow outing also marked a milestone for George and Louis, who were attending the Commonwealth Games for the first time. Charlotte, by contrast, accompanied her parents to one of the competitions during the 2022 Games.

George’s next appearance in the public eye could look very different. Shortly after Trooping the Colour in June, Kensington Palace confirmed that he will continue a long-standing royal tradition by attending Eton College beginning this school year.

The prestigious boarding school has educated generations of Britain’s leaders, including King Charles III and Prince William, along with numerous prime ministers, business leaders and accomplished athletes. Meanwhile, Charlotte and Louis will continue their education at Lambrook School.

Although the Commonwealth Games provided the backdrop, the family’s appearance carried added significance because of its timing. With George preparing to begin boarding school, the outing offered one of the last public glimpses of the Wales family together before a major change in their day-to-day lives. For royal watchers, it felt like more than another stop on the royal calendar. It marked the close of one chapter before the next begins.
