The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have stepped down as senior royals, but they are determined to maintain their award-winning philanthropic efforts on the world stage, and their announcement is testimony to that. Prince Harry and his wife will carry out a joint two-day visit to Jordan, alongside the current World Health Organisation Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to highlight humanitarian health responses during conflict.

They have a packed schedule on Wednesday and Thursday, including a visit to World Central Kitchen, an organisation which coordinates and deploys food and humanitarian assistance into Gaza. The couple will also spend time at the Questscope at the Za’atari Refugee Camp, a safe harbour for displaced Syrians. Their schedule also allows time for them to visit initiatives they have supported financially, funding medical evacuations for children affected by the conflict in Gaza.

This trip comes after Prince Harry’s appearance alongside Dr Tedros at Imperial College London’s Centre for Blast Injury Studies last September. This is a cause close to Harry’s heart not only because of his time in the military but also because of his mother, the late Princess Diana’s humanitarian passion with her work for the British Red Cross and the HALO Trust.

At the time, Dr Tedros wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “It was a great pleasure to meet with the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, at @imperialcollege today. I have deep admiration for the Duke’s humanitarian spirit to make a difference in the world, especially to alleviate the suffering of people living in conflict settings. I am particularly grateful for the commitment he and his Archewell Foundation have shown towards @WHO’s work to evacuate patients from #Gaza needing life-saving care outside of the war-ravaged Strip.”

Princess Kate’s upbringing in Jordan

While there is no public record of Prince Harry visiting Jordan before, his brother Prince William went as part of a tour of the Middle East in 2018. William’s wife Princess Kate did not go with him, but it was reported by Wiilliam at the time that she was ‘sorry’ she couldn’t go because she would have liked to revisit the place she spent some of her childhood.

in a speech during his trip: “My wife Catherine is very sorry she cannot be here with me so soon after the birth of our son Louis, but her family remembers very fondly the almost three years she spent here as a child when her father worked for British Airways in Amman.”

The now-royal even went to nursery in Jordan where they learnt in both English and Arabic and would read a verse of the Quran following their morning singing session.
