Prince Harry had the sweetest reaction when he spotted a fellow redhead during his visit to Australia with Meghan Markle this week.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, gave the young fan a fist bump when he spotted his bright red locks in a crowd at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne – the first stop in their four-day tour Down Under.
Harry, who is known for his famous red hair, exclaimed: “Yes! Gingers rule!” after spotting the royal fan, who was wearing a black T-shirt and standing with crowds in the hospital foyer.
It was one of several heartwarming interactions with well-wishers, with Meghan telling people to “call me Meg” as they arrived, while Harry said they could address them “however you like”.
Harry’s parents, the King and Diana, Princess of Wales, visited the Royal Children’s Hospital in 1985, meeting patients while on a visit to the state of Victoria.
The Sussexes landed in Australia on Tuesday on a commercial flight for a packed itinerary including stops in Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney.
Harry’s bright red locks
Prince Harry is known for his fiery red hair, which his children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, have inherited.
Meghan has shared glimpses of her two adorable children on Instagram over the past year, showing snapshots of their glowing red locks as they enjoy life at home in Montecito, California.
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2023, Harry said his children take after his mum, the late Princess Diana. He said: “The ginger gene is a strong one! The Spencer gene is very, very strong.
“I actually really, genuinely thought at the beginning of my relationship [with Meghan] that should this go the distance and we have kids that there’s no way the ginger gene will stand up to my wife’s genes, but I was wrong!” “Go gingers,” he added.
Runs in the family
All three of Princess Diana’s siblings, Harry’s aunts and uncles, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Charles Spencer, all have naturally red hair.
Other royals with red locks include Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, while their daughter, Princess Beatrice, has natural strawberry blonde locks. Even Meghan Markle briefly added a red tint to her hair back in 2012.
Speaking in their Netflix documentary in 2022, Harry retold the story of Meghan’s first meeting with Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the family.
He recalled: “I think they were surprised. Maybe surprised that a ginger could land such a beautiful woman and such an intelligent woman.”
