Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands is doing things her way. On 17 April, the 22-year-old daughter of King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima stepped out for a two-day official tour of Amsterdam and hinted at how she might use fashion to signal the sense of modernity that she signifies as future queen.
The graduate of the University of Amsterdam stopped to pose for a photo with Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema in Amsterdam before heading off with her around the city to meet residents and representatives from the science, sport, culture, housing and social sectors.

Gone were any signs of a formal suit as Amalia donned a slinky bodysuit, as identified by Royal Fashion Police on Instagram as Max Mara’s ‘Nigella’ style with a wrap top and long sleeves. She styled the bodysuit with navy trousers and heeled boots.

She also carried a clutch by the high-street brand Zara and wore her blonde hair straight. It’s a look that struck fashion stylist Leanne Jones as a sign of the monarchy of the future under heiress Amalia.

Princess Amalia rocked a more relaxed and contemporary look
“This is a masterclass in smart-casual dressing and signals a wider shift in how modern monarchies are choosing to present themselves. We’ve seen it within the British royal family, too, where more relaxed and contemporary looks are becoming not just accepted, but expected,” Leanne tells us.
“What stands out here is the confidence behind it. Princess Amalia is clearly expressing her own style – from her oversized earrings to the style of her hair, to the outfit itself. In doing so, she is making the monarchy feel more accessible and in step with the world around it, and that’s hugely admirable – and relatable.”
According to a stylist, Princess Amalia quietly communicating values of openness and modernity
With this seemingly understated outfit, Amalia proves fashion has real currency. “Fashion may often be dismissed as superficial, but in moments like this, it becomes a powerful form of soft diplomacy, quietly communicating values of openness and modernity.
“And, of course, it helps that the look itself is so well executed. That recognisable Zara clutch adds a touch of understated elegance – proof that great style doesn’t need to be overcomplicated or overpriced to make an impact.”

Amalia continued her streak of impactful, yet restrained dressing. Later in the day, she finessed a quick outfit change, ready to be welcomed by Amsterdam police chief Peter Holla during a visit to the police station in the city centre of Amsterdam-Noord.
She rocked wide-leg dark-wash jeans with a white T-shirt, oversized camel blazer and brown loafers. Her chunky gold hoop earrings added another youthful touch.
