The Princess of Wales looked radiant in a red and white midi dress following her last-minute decision to join her father-in-law, King Charles, at a reception at St James’s Palace on Tuesday evening.
Just hours after Kensington Palace had announced her plans to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK, Kate stepped into the Throne Room of the palace in a Rodarte dress that seemed to send a poignant message.
Showing her love and support for others who had been diagnosed with cancer, she wore a silk twill dress covered in dainty white hearts and featuring a belted waist and a contrasting collar.
Cherry-hued heels and a matching Miu Miu clutch completed her outfit, while even the ruby necklace and matching drop earrings tied in with the colour scheme.
Intentional dressing
With 15 years of experience honing her sartorial skills as part of the royal family, Kate ensures every outfit is carefully chosen for each occasion. When she travels, for example, she often showcases the art of flag dressing, choosing local designers or incorporating colours that nod to the nation’s flag.
This measured approach extends to her daily outings, too. Amanda Wakeley previously told HELLO!: “I think she uses fashion with clear intention, but never in a way that feels calculated for its own sake. It comes across as instinctive and grounded in a strong understanding of both her role and the language of clothing.”
Meanwhile, there may also be an element of colour psychology in her outfits. Colour expert, personal stylist and fashion commentator Marina Thomas explained that Kate often wears red at important engagements.
“One reason Kate may be choosing to wear red is due to it symbolising courage, willpower and sacrifice,” Marina told us. “This symbolism dates back to the Spartans, Persians, and later the Romans, who all wore scarlet in battle.”
As well as portraying confidence, it is also strongly associated with love, Marina noted.
“This is certainly a strong message Kate is either actively or subliminally choosing to send to the public: a message of unity, strength, and hope.” All of these are particularly poignant for her most recent outing.

By January 2025, Kate shared the happy news that she was in remission, but her father-in-law continues to undergo treatment.
King Charles was also diagnosed with cancer in 2024, but he revealed in December 2025 that it was being reduced in a Stand Up To Cancer campaign video.
At the St James’s Palace reception on Tuesday, Davina McCall opened up about how she and Charles had been communicating through their cancer journeys. She told the Princess of Wales that he had called her following her brain tumour diagnosis in 2024, and she had also reached out when she heard his news.
