Royal watchers have put forward many theories, among them that her royal calendar is picking up again, even if she is not expected to take on a front-line role within the family or to suddenly ramp up her duties.

In recent years, Princess Sofia has stepped back from events and engagements she would normally attend. Following the birth of her fourth child, Princess Ines, Sofia skipped the 2025 Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, an event she had attended regularly since her engagement to Prince Carl Philip in 2014.
Her absence coincided with her name being featured on the Epstein Files. Sofia addressed the matter publicly on February 10, 2026, stating that she had met Jeffrey Epstein on a few occasions in her twenties, at a social event and a film screening, and that she had had no contact with him since. Still, her statement prompted closer scrutiny of that period in her life, with many examining the timeline of her time in New York and any further connections to Epstein’s circle.

In May, she and Prince Carl Philip traveled to Florence to visit the UNICEF Office of Strategy and Evidence – Innocenti, where discussions centered on child welfare and the opportunities and risks that digital environments pose for children. She has also been included on the royal calendar for the 30th anniversary of Junibacken, the beloved Stockholm children’s attraction, taking place on June 8. It will mark Sofia’s fourteenth royal engagement of the year and stands in contrast to the whole of last year, when she had thirteen official appearances in total.
Swedish outlet Svensk Damtidning reports that this shift is driven by King Carl XVI Gustaf, who ultimately determines how institutional responsibilities are distributed among the family. “The king has the last word regarding when and where members of the royal family will be working. He now wants Princess Sofia to take a step forward,” the outlet reports, as translated by HOLA! Spain. “These decisions are made alongside Sofia. The princess takes her job seriously and knows that she has to assume certain responsibilities. This applies to the entire royal family.”

Princess Sofia’s appearances at royal events tend to be understated, reflecting her role as the consort of a prince who holds fourth place in the line of succession. The hat she wore to King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 80th birthday celebrations was a departure from that image and quickly became a talking point, particularly since it marked her first public appearance in seventy days.
The choice drew comparisons to the hat Melania Trump wore to Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration in January 2025. In the weeks since, debate has continued over whether Sofia’s hat was a deliberate attempt to remain out of the spotlight at an event centered on the King. Others argue that it had the opposite effect, drawing more attention to her and projecting the image of someone with something to hide.
