Queen Mary brought her signature blend of understated elegance and practicality to a particularly meaningful royal engagement this week.
The Danish Queen paid a visit to the future Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital in Copenhagen, stepping inside the still-under-construction facility that bears her name and is expected to open its doors in 2027. The Royal House shared new photographs from the visit on September 4.
For the behind-the-scenes tour, Mary embraced a relaxed take on royal workwear. The 54-year-old wore a white button-down shirt with the sleeves casually rolled above her wrists, pairing the timeless staple with a flowing ankle-length skirt covered in an intricate botanical-inspired print.
Rather than opting for a more formal hairstyle, the Queen swept her brunette locks into a low ponytail, keeping her beauty look equally effortless. A pair of oversized tortoiseshell glasses became the standout accessory as she examined plans and toured the developing interiors.

But behind the fashion moment was an engagement with a deeply personal connection. The facility’s full name, “Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital – Riget for børn, unge og gravide,” incorporates the Queen’s own first and middle names, Mary Elizabeth.

According to the Royal House, the new facility will be the first hospital of its kind in the world and will focus on children, young people and pregnant women.

The design is also intended to move beyond the traditional hospital experience. Its spaces are being created with a safe, home-like atmosphere in mind, accommodating not only patients’ medical needs but also the everyday lives of patients and their loved ones.
