Queen Máxima moved by soccer players’ emotional stories during colorful stadium appearance

Queen Máxima traded the palace for the soccer pitch on Wednesday, September 16, stepping inside NAC Breda’s Rat Verlegh Stadium for an outing centered on a subject far removed from goals and scoreboards.

The 55-year-old royal traveled to Breda for a gathering surrounding Echte Mannen Huilen Niet, or Real Men Don’t Cry, a documentary that puts the mental health of men in professional soccer at the center of the conversation. 

The film follows seven current and former professional players as they open up about experiences including grief, loneliness, performance pressure, panic attacks and the fear of showing emotion. 

Máxima joined the initiative’s organizers, former and current players and other partners at the stadium, where she attended a panel discussion prompted by excerpts from the documentary.

According to the Eredivisie, those in attendance were visibly moved by the players’ openness as the discussion explored the importance of making conversations about men’s mental health more commonplace. 

The setting was particularly significant. Soccer is a world traditionally associated with competition, resilience, and performing under pressure, while the initiative behind Real Men Don’t Cry is deliberately using the sport to challenge the idea that vulnerability should be hidden.

The documentary brought Gianni Zuiverloon, Edson Braafheid, Ron Vlaar, Calvin Jong a Pin, Thomas Marijnissen, Ryan Donk and Mark Diemers together at the KNVB complex in Zeist, where they spent several days without phones or an audience and spoke candidly about their experiences. 

The project has expanded beyond the film itself. Cinetree and the Play Mental Foundation are organizing screenings and workshops designed to encourage conversations about subjects such as performance pressure and self-image, while an educational module has also been developed for secondary schools.

NAC Breda has its own Kleedkamersessies, or locker-room sessions, which bring supporters together for informal group conversations about mental health.

A royal take on soccer style:

Máxima certainly didn’t blend into the sidelines. The Dutch queen made a striking entrance in a vivid orange-red ensemble by Natan, pairing fluid wide-leg trousers with a coordinating long-sleeved top featuring an elegant draped neckline and a tie detail defining the waist. 

The saturated shade offered a particularly fitting nod to the color so closely associated with the Dutch royal family and the Netherlands. Contemporary coverage of Wednesday’s appearance also identifies the ensemble as Natan.

She completed the monochromatic look with pointed-toe caramel-brown heels and a coordinating clutch, allowing the bright tailoring to remain the focal point. 

Her blonde hair was worn loose and straight with a side part, while oversized sunglasses came out as she sat outdoors in the stadium.

Máxima also added a playful burst of color with rectangular hoop earrings set with a rainbow of multicolored stones, visible in close-up photos from the engagement. The colorful jewelry provided a subtle contrast against her otherwise tonal outfit.

The queen appeared relaxed throughout the visit, smiling for a group photograph beside the pitch and stopping to greet members of the public outside the stadium, where she was presented with flowers and posed for photos.

But once inside, attention turned firmly toward the reason for her visit. Máxima listened as participants discussed the pressures men can face both within and beyond professional sports and the importance of making it easier to speak openly when something isn’t right.

The gathering forms part of a wider campaign extending the documentary’s message into clubs and communities. Fifty free workshops are being organized across the Netherlands with the Eredivisie, while screenings are being offered to soccer clubs, companies and community groups to help begin conversations that might otherwise never take place.

For Máxima, Wednesday’s stadium appearance wasn’t about watching what happened on the field. Instead, it put the spotlight on what can happen to athletes once the cheering stops, and on a growing effort within Dutch soccer to make speaking about vulnerability part of the game, too.
