BBC viewers have been left “absolutely gutted” after TV presenter Richard Osman announced he would be stepping down from his beloved show, Richard Osman’s House of Games, after nine years at the helm.

The popular TV presenter, who is also the author behind The Thursday Murder Club franchise, announced the news on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, which he co-hosts with journalist Marina Hyde.

Richard Osman departs House of Games

The presenter paired the announcement with a statement on Instagram, which was also posted on the official House of Games account.

“Big news from ROHOG HQ! After nine years, @misterosman will be handing over the House of Games reins to a new host. ‘It has been such a great pleasure, and honour, to present House Of Games for the last nine years, with the absolute best team in television. But it’s time to let someone else have a go, and I’m very excited to hand over the House keys to the lucky new host!’ Watch this space…”

Meanwhile, Richard posted a follow-up, which he used to thank fans for their continued support.

“Thank you for all your kind words as I step down from #HouseOfGames after nine amazing years,” he penned. “It is honestly the most fun show to work on, with the most wonderful team, but, after 800 episodes it’s time to hand over the keys to a new host. There are plenty of new episodes still to air though, and I’ll even be filming one final handover week later in the year! It really has been a treat from start to finish.”

As for who will step into his shoes for the role next, however, is yet to be announced.

Fans react to the news

After nine years on the show, it’s no surprise that BBC viewers were quick to take to social media to share their disappointment and to thank Richard for his years of hard work.

“Absolutely gutted, it’s my favourite programme with Richard in charge. It just won’t be the same without him,” wrote one person, while another added: “Oh, Richard. Wishing you the best in your future endeavours but this is sad news for a Tuesday.”

A third added: “Gutted. Beyond belief. I hope it stays the same, it’s brilliant!” while a fourth said: “Oh no, that is a real shame. Richard is this program, his humour and his approach to celebrities and the questions themselves are what makes the show such fun, he will be sorely missed and very hard to replace.”

What happens on Richard Osman’s House of Games?

Hosted by Richard, who sits in his signature red chair, the game show sees four celebrity contestants go head-to-head to test their general knowledge.

The show has welcomed a plethora of famous names, including Michelle Ackerley, Katie Derham, Karen Hauer, Geoff Norcott, Josh Jones, Sarah Keyworth, Melvin Odoom and Kimberly Wyatt.

Richard Osman’s House of Games continues on Tuesday 3 March at 6pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
