King Harald V spent part of Friday at Oslo’s Rikshospitalet. For a few tense hours, that fact was enough to alarm a country bracing for bad royal news. The outlet Se og Hør reported that the 89-year-old monarch had been taken to the hospital by ambulance. The story spread so fast that the palace felt the need to respond within hours.
The Norwegian Royal Court’s answer was blunt. “It is not correct, as published by Se og Hør, that the King was driven to Rikshospitalet by ambulance today,” said a spokesperson. “The King was there today for a planned checkup and follow-up with a doctor, and he was driven in his own car.”
The publication’s editor-in-chief told VG that his reporters had offered the ambulance claim directly to the royal house before publishing, claiming that the news hadn’t been denied. Later, they clarified that the King had used a personal vehicle.
The outlet said it updated its story since.
Whatever the mode of transport, the visit was a routine, pre-scheduled medical review, the kind any 89-year-old might have on the calendar. It didn’t slow King Harald down. Earlier that Friday, according to the Palace’s official program, he met with Norway’s defense minister and sat in on a Council of State session alongside his son, Crown Prince Haakon.

The speed with which the ambulance rumor took hold shows just how much King Harald’s health has weighed on Norwegians lately. He turned 89 in February, days before he was hospitalized in Tenerife, Spain, while on a private holiday with Queen Sonja. Doctors there treated him for an infection and dehydration, and he spent two days at the private Hospiten Sur hospital before flying home.
It wasn’t his first scare abroad. In 2024, a vacation in Malaysia turned into a medical emergency when the King’s heart rate dropped dangerously low. He was fitted with a temporary pacemaker on the island before being flown back to Norway, where surgeons implanted a permanent device at Rikshospitalet.
Crown Prince Haakon stepped in to handle the monarch’s official duties while his father recovered.

Friday’s false alarm landed on a family that has barely caught its breath in 2026. Queen Sonja, 88, was rushed to the National Hospital in late May. Crown Princess Mette-Marit spent weeks fighting worsening symptoms of the pulmonary fibrosis she was first diagnosed with in 2018. By June, she received a double lung transplant, an intervention that has been described as life-saving and a last resort for patients. She was discharged from Rikshospitalet on July 14 and appears to be recovering well at home.
That health crisis also reshaped her daughter’s life. Princess Ingrid Alexandra cut her studies short at the University of Sydney, returning to Norway where she enrolled as an exchange student at the University of Oslo to stay close to her mother.
Meanwhile, the family’s legal troubles have run on a separate yet equally grim track. Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit’s eldest son, was convicted in June on multiple counts, including two counts of rape. He was sentenced to four years in prison.
