Sarah Jessica Parker has given fans a touching glimpse into her decades-long love story with husband Matthew Broderick as the couple celebrated an incredible 29 years of marriage.
Marking the milestone anniversary on Instagram, the Sex and the City star shared a series of personal throwback photos, including an especially intimate Polaroid capturing the couple away from the red carpets and Hollywood spotlight.
In the candid snap, Sarah Jessica curled up beside Matthew inside their home as the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off actor kissed her forehead while casually snacking from a bowl, creating a rare and tender glimpse into their private life together.
“May 19th, 1997-May 19th, 2026,” she wrote alongside the nostalgic images. “29 years. And counting. Here’s to you my darling. With your favorite band joining me in serenading you. Us. Forever young. Xxx, Your wife Sarah Jessica.”
The heartfelt post was quickly flooded with messages from fans and famous friends alike, including longtime close friend Andy Cohen, who joked: “And they said it wouldn’t last!”
© Getty ImagesSarah Jessica and Matthew’s love story began long before they became one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples. The pair first met in 1991 through Sarah’s brothers, Toby and Pippin, who were involved with New York theatre company Naked Angels.
At the time, both actors were dating other people, something Sarah later admitted made the beginning of their romance complicated.
“We were both seeing other people, so it was illegal,” she joked during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. “We understood that we had to do right by the other people and break up officially.”
© Getty ImagesThe couple would later share the stage together in the Broadway production of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 1996, just one year before they tied the knot at New York’s historic Angel Orensanz Synagogue on May 19, 1997.
Even before their wedding, Sarah Jessica spoke openly about how deeply she had fallen for Matthew.
“He’s the funniest fellow I’ve met in my whole life,” she told the Los Angeles Times at the time. “He’s so bright, so handsome. I think he’s the most handsome man I’ve seen in my life and he inspires me. I’m mad for him.”
© Getty ImagesOver the years, the actress has continued to gush about the qualities that first drew her to her husband, from his intelligence and humour to the simple way he moved through life in New York City. “He was always travelling around on his bicycle,” she once recalled. “He’s really smart and really talented. And he was, I thought, so beautiful and handsome and charming.”
Matthew, meanwhile, admitted it was essentially love at first sight.”The first time I met her, I saw her walking down the street and thought, ‘That’s it,’” he shared during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
Together, the couple went on to build a family alongside their hugely successful careers. They welcomed son James Wilke in 2002, before daughters Marion and Tabitha arrived via surrogate in 2009.
Despite spending decades in the public eye, Sarah Jessica has often spoken honestly about the realities of long-term relationships, insisting that lasting love requires patience, resilience and growth.
“We’ve been together for 20 years and you have good days, you have decent days and you have bad days,” she previously told The Telegraph. “That’s a marriage. That’s a relationship.” She added: “If you’re in it for the long haul and you want meaningful relationships, you are going to go through lots of different periods.”
