Fans are mourning the loss of Michael Pennington, the acclaimed British star best known to global audiences for his role in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, who has died aged 82.

His death was reported on May 10 by The Telegraph, with no cause given. While many will instantly recognise Michael as the stern and memorable Moff Jerjerrod, the Death Star commander famously confronted by Darth Vader on behalf of Emperor Palpatine, his career extended far beyond the galaxy far, far away. In fact, it was on the stage, rather than the screen, where he truly made his mark.

A towering figure in British theatre, Michael devoted decades of his life to Shakespeare. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964, initially as a young actor, before rising through the ranks to become one of its most respected performers.

His passion for the Bard was so profound that he later founded The English Shakespeare Company in 1986, with the aim of bringing ambitious classical productions to wider audiences through touring.

In a decision that spoke volumes about his artistic priorities, Michael famously turned down the opportunity to star opposite Meryl Streep in the 1980 film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. “I realised I couldn’t let Hamlet go,” he later said, describing the iconic role as “one of the prizes”.

Though he would eventually share the screen with the Oscar-winning actress years later in The Iron Lady, his heart always remained firmly rooted in theatre.

That said, Michael’s screen career was both extensive and varied. He appeared in a host of beloved British television dramas and films, as well as internationally recognised series including Waking the Dead and The Tudors. In later years, he lent his voice to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series Raised by Wolves, marking his final role in 2022.

Beyond acting, he was also an accomplished writer, authoring several books that explored the craft of performance and the intricacies of the entertainment industry.

In his personal life, Michael married Katharine Barker in 1964, with whom he welcomed a son before the couple separated in 1967. He later shared a long and enduring relationship with partner Prue Skene, who sadly passed away in 2025.
