A century-old wedding present has quietly become one of the most untouchable jewels in royal history. The Spencer Tiara, forever linked to the image of Diana, Princess of Wales, has never sat on Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle’s heads.
The reason has nothing to do with taste, and everything to do with ownership: this diamond heirloom was never part of the royal vault to begin with.
A gift that became a family rite of passage
The tiara’s story dates back to 1919, when Lady Cynthia Hamilton — Diana’s paternal grandmother — married Viscount Althorp, the future 7th Earl Spencer. Its heart-shaped centerpiece, a wedding gift from the groom’s mother, would later be expanded by the royal jeweler Garrard in the 1930s into the full diamond piece that it is today, its design threaded through with floral motifs, and its diamonds set in gold and silver.
From there, it became something closer to tradition than decoration. When Diana’s father, Earl John Spencer, inherited it in the 1970s, each of his daughters wore it down the aisle: Lady Jane in 1978, Lady Sarah in 1980, and finally Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. The tiara was worn memorably as she walked toward the altar and Prince Charles, with her choosing to wear her family’s diamonds rather than anything borrowed from the Windsor vault.

Choosing the Spencer Tiara for her wedding hinted at where her loyalties sat — with her own family’s legacy, not only with the institution she was marrying into.
Why the royal brides who followed her never had the option
Speculation has trailed both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle for years: would either choose the Spencer Tiara as a tribute to Diana on her wedding day?
Neither could. The tiara was never Crown property. It is a private possession of the Spencer family, today held by Diana’s younger brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer. Kate and Meghan wore tiaras drawn from the royal collection, pieces once assigned by Queen Elizabeth II and now held under King Charles III.

According to Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, the Spencer Tiara was briefly, genuinely on the table: “My aunts asked if Meg would like to wear my mother’s. We were both touched. Meg then spent hours and hours with her dress designer, getting the veil to match the tiara, giving it a similar scalloped edge.”
The plan shifted late in the process. As Harry recounts it: “Shortly before the wedding, however, Granny reached out. She offered us access to her collection of tiaras.” Meghan ultimately wore a diamond tiara made for Queen Mary, on loan from the Queen.
A legacy that outlived her
Diana’s death in 1997 didn’t retire the tiara — it simply passed, as it always had, to the next Spencer bride. Her niece Celia McCorquodale wore it at her own wedding, as did Victoria Lockwood, who married into the family. Diana’s sisters, Lady Jane and Lady Sarah, have worn it on other occasions.
