When news broke that Naga Munchetty is stepping away from the iconic BBC Breakfast sofa after 17 years to anchor BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, we all inwardly gasped.

For nearly two decades, she has been a television morning staple: razor-sharp, fiercely authentic, and completely unwilling to suffer fools.

Standing at the threshold of a new era, 51-year-old Naga is stepping into her second act with a willingness to put in the work. In the  statement announcing the news, she said: “Presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live is an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up. It will take a huge amount of work and require 100% of my focus and energy, and I’m really looking forward to throwing myself into the role.

In an industry that historically pressured women to dim their light as they aged, Naga is doing the exact opposite.

Refusing to shrink

Looking back over a high-pressure career spent under the microscopic scrutiny of live television, Naga’s reflections reveal the hard-won wisdom of a woman who spent years fighting for her space. Speaking to Ateh Jewel on the Second Act podcast less than a year ago, her advice to her younger self hits with remarkable weight in light of her recent career move: “The world is competitive, people will not want you to succeed, stop battering yourself and tell yourself ‘well done’ now and then.”

It’s a striking admission from someone who always appears unflappable on screen.

“Stop caring about what everyone thinks,” she told Ateh at the time. “Stop modifying yourself, stop making yourself small to please people. I did too much of that.”

Trading the constraints of TV studio cameras for the fast-paced, unscripted freedom of full-time radio is the physical embodiment of that philosophy.

Ambition doesn’t fade

While milestone birthdays can carry a lot of anxiety, Naga greeted her 50th birthday with joy.

“I’m 50 now, quite recently. Yeah, second act to me means recognise what you have done, who you are, and if you’re happy with who you are celebrating.”

She added: “I’ve lived half a century – do you know how few people get here? I am healthy, I am enjoying my life and I have opportunities, a job I love, friends and family I love. I have golf in my life.”

Naga admits that she learnt a lot from her forties – decade where she shed the toxic habit of comparison.

“I really enjoyed my 40s. I felt much more settled in myself, and with my mind. I didn’t stop being ambitious, I never will, but I stopped chasing and worrying about what everyone else was doing and why I wasn’t. I love seeing other people’s success, but I just felt constantly as if I was underachieving, and still do, in many ways.”

That subtle, lingering itch – the feeling that there is still more to prove – is precisely why her transition to 5 Live is so exciting.
