Alan Titchmarsh finally sells £4 million home despite ongoing ‘row’

Alan Titchmarsh has finally sold his sprawling £3.95 million countryside home, according to reports.

The British gardening legend, 77, revealed last year that he and his wife of 50 years, Alison, 74, were looking to downsize due to the upkeep of the sprawling grade II-listed property in Holybourne, a rural village near Alton in Hampshire.

But their decision to sell the property also coincided with plans that developers plan to build 160 homes just yards from Alan’s soon-to-be former home, despite around 850 complaints from the village’s 1,500 local residents, the Mail reported.

Now the publication has revealed that a sale has gone through and that Alan and Alison have now relocated to a £ 2.6 million luxury five-bed home in Surrey, which they bought from Omaze winner Rachael Reid, who won the property after purchasing a £10 raffle ticket.

While the sale price is yet to be disclosed, Alan’s former home was originally listed for sale at just under £4 million, but was reduced to £3.5 million.

Speaking to House Beautiful last month, Alan said of his new home: “The house is wonderfully modern and completely different from the Georgian farmhouse where we were before.”

“It’s a single-storey dwelling that’s quite long, but we’re refusing to use the B-word because we have five steps! It’s a different way of life and quite exciting. It’s liberating.”

Why did Alan move?

While Alan hasn’t commented on the plans to build new homes, he has revealed the reason for wanting to up sticks.

 “To be honest, we had no plans to move. When you restore an old house and make a garden around it, you pour so much of your heart and soul into it that moving on is bound to be a wrench.”

He added: “But when you are knocking on a bit (which I refuse to believe, despite what the numbers tell me), you do muse on the future – a future which I hope will be long and fulfilling.

“Looking after four acres and a Grade II-listed house has been – and still is – a treat beyond measure, but the day will come when it starts to be overwhelming, and I’d rather move on to fresh pastures before that becomes the case.”
