Aubrey Plaza has spoken out for the first time about her surprise pregnancy in an appearance on the Smartless podcast with actors Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes.
The Parks and Recreation actress confirmed on the April 13 episode that she was expecting her first child with her partner, Christopher Abbott, six days after the news broke on social media. “Well, there’s a baby inside of me,” Aubrey told the hosts. “No, I said there is a baby inside of me right now.”
“Today was a big day. I went to the doctor’s today, and my dog also went to the doctor’s,” she continued. “And both of us – my dog’s getting a scan right now. I got a scan earlier. I’m not kidding.”
“She had to get an ultrasound on her stomach. And then I got an ultrasound on my stomach, and there is a baby in there,” Aubrey added. “It already has a cloak and a little hat. I think it’s gonna come out.”
The brunette beauty shared that she was “excited” to become a mother and welcome a baby with Christopher.
“I’ve always wanted to see what that’s all about, you know? It just seems so interesting, that whole thing,” she explained. Aubrey added that while she and Christopher had “not totally thought through” where they would raise their baby, the pair would settle somewhere on the “East Coast for sure”.
The intensely private couple first collaborated on the 2020 film Black Bear, followed by the off-Broadway play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea between 2023 and 2024. Prior to her romance with Christopher, Aubrey was married to director Jeff Baena, yet the duo separated in September 2024.
She opened up about the realities of their relationship in a candid interview with GQ in 2022. “I’ve been with my husband for 12 years. I relate to being in a relationship that has peaks and valleys, and going through a rough patch and comparing yourself to another couple that seems perfect,” she admitted.
Jeff passed away in January 2025, leaving his estranged wife devastated. Several months after his passing, Aubrey broke her silence on the Good Hang podcast, hosted by her former co-star, Amy Poehler.
“Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,” she shared with Amy. “Overall, I’m here, and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay, but, you know, it’s a daily struggle.”
“At all times, there’s a giant ocean of just awfulness that’s just right there, and I can see it,” she continued. “Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it. And sometimes I look at it, and sometimes I just try to get away from it, but it’s always there.”
Aubrey also paid tribute to the late director during an appearance on Saturday Night Live a month after his death, and wore a tie-dye shirt he had given her during their relationship.
