Charlene has a long history with sport, with her representing her country of South Africa at the Olympics. As a lifelong swimmer, Charlene has discussed numerous times why sports matter, teaching kids and youths many important traits that will come in handy later in life.

“Sport taught me discipline, respect, and self-improvement,” said the Princess in a statement issued by the Monaco Royal House.

“Today, I wish to place this experience at the service of athletes. I approach this role with a deep sense of commitment. Sport carries within it not only the pursuit of excellence, but also the responsibility to unite, inspire, and pass on values.”

Charlene built an impressive career as an athlete. By the end of the ’90s, she was one of the most promising swimmers in South Africa, having won national and international titles. In 2000, she qualified for the Sydney Olympic Games.

It was in one of those settings where she met Prince Albert, with the two first meeting at a swimming competition hosted in Monaco. The two bonded over their Olympic experiences, with Prince Albert being a five-time Olympian in bobsleigh.

The Monegasque Olympic Committee (COM) shared the news on their general assembly, describing Charlene as a “former Olympic swimmer who represented her country at the highest level.” She continues “her long-standing commitment to sport, youth, and Olympic values” with this position.

The Committee is in charge of supporting athletes from Monaco, optimizing their prep and performance as they go through their journey and work. Of the Princess’ role, the press release claims she “will actively contribute to strengthening support systems for high-level athletes, while also promoting an inclusive, supportive, and ethical vision of sport.”

Over the past year, she’s been involved with the Water Safety programme, an initiative led by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation to prevent drownings and teach children different techniques of water rescue.

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation is one of Charlene’s most important achievements. Founded in 2012, the organization supports and funds educational projects in various parts of the world.
