Bloodied, Beaten, and Rushed Away by Ambulance

Fans of mixed martial arts and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) around the world, especially in Spain, are still reeling from what happened to Ilia Topuria on Sunday. The Spanish star, born in Georgia and raised in Spain, emerged badly beaten from the event held in Washington, D.C., to celebrate Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

Topuria absorbed such a punishing beating that he lasted only four rounds before being rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The damage left his face swollen, bloodied, and nearly unrecognizable. The resulting images were shocking, capturing a nightmare few could have imagined.

It was an especially painful defeat, undoubtedly the worst of his career. The loss cost “El Matador” his undefeated record and saw him dethroned as UFC lightweight champion by American Justin Gaethje. The dramatic bout unfolded on the White House South Lawn and was ultimately stopped before things grew even worse, at the request of Topuria’s brother and chief cornerman, Aleksandre Topuria.

From the corner, Aleksandre urged the referee to stop the fight, warning that Ilia could no longer see because both of his eyes had swollen completely shut. After the stoppage, Topuria needed assistance leaving the Octagon, struggling to walk as the extent of the damage was written all over his face.

Donald Trump Watches as Justin Gaethje Claims the Lightweight Crown

Watching from ringside were President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, joined by family members, administration officials, and representatives of the U.S. Armed Forces. Unsurprisingly, Gaethje’s victory was met with enthusiastic celebration after he had handed a stunning defeat to a man who, until then, had seemed unbeatable.

The crowd of roughly 4,000 spectators also erupted in celebration for the American fighter, who has further cemented his status as a national sports hero. On the other side, disappointment hung over Topuria and his team as they quietly left the South Lawn. Head down and limping, he wore the look of a man devastated by defeat.

Dana White Provides an Update on Topuria’s Condition

Now stripped of the belt that crowned him the best lightweight fighter in the world, the hope is simply that the 29-year-old Topuria recovers as quickly as possible. The priority is that he avoids any lasting effects—physical or emotional—from the punishment he absorbed.

Concern about his condition was echoed by UFC president Dana White in comments to reporters. “He’s a mess. I’m not a doctor, but it looks like he may have suffered an orbital fracture,” White said after the fight.

The UFC chief added that he wants the Spanish fighter to “go home, rest, and take his time.” “He shouldn’t be thinking about fighting again right now. He should be focused on getting healthy,” White said.

Things have clearly not gone Topuria’s way in recent months. Last April, he announced plans to relocate to Miami, a move driven by both professional and personal considerations.

His young daughter lives in Florida with his former partner, Giorgina Uzcategui, from whom he separated in 2025 following a contentious divorce. During those proceedings, the Venezuelan model and entrepreneur accused him of domestic abuse. Topuria vehemently denied the allegations, calling them an “attempt at extortion.” The lawsuit was ultimately withdrawn after the two parties reached a settlement.
