After nearly 75 years of marriage, William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett are reflecting candidly on the reality behind one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting love stories.
The beloved couple, who tied the knot in 1951, have opened up about the unconventional dynamic that helped sustain their marriage through decades of fame, distance, heartbreak and changing times.
William, adored by generations of fans for his role as Mr. Feeny in Boy Meets World, and Bonnie, celebrated for her work in Little House on the Prairie and St. Elsewhere, admitted their relationship was never built around strict rules or traditional expectations.
Bonnie explained that recent headlines surrounding their so-called “open marriage” had exaggerated the reality of what happened between them during their many decades together.
“It’s funny, the press will pick up on something and make more of it than it was,” she told the Daily Mail. “There was never any discussion as to what we were going to do, but in 75 years, the two of you together, you know, it would be abnormal if you weren’t attracted occasionally to other people.”
© Getty ImagesThe actress, now 96, revealed that there were moments over the years when both she and William found themselves drawn to other people, something she also discussed openly in her 2023 memoir, Middle of the Rainbow.
“Bill and I never sit down and make rules,” she explained. “We never sit down and talk about these things. We just don’t. We just live our lives. And if he’s away for a year, he’s away for a year.”
Bonnie reflected on how their lives occasionally moved in different directions, particularly during periods when their careers kept them apart for long stretches of time.

Still, Bonnie admitted that some periods of their marriage were deeply painful. She previously revealed that she had a brief affair with another actor during the late 1950s, while William later became involved with a producer during the 1970s, something Bonnie described as devastating.
Looking back on that chapter, she explained that the cultural atmosphere of the time also shaped their experiences.
“It was at a time in New York when there was a lot of sex and a lot of people doing all kinds of things,” she recalled. “Very free.”

For fans, their story feels increasingly rare in Hollywood, where long marriages can often seem impossible under the pressures of fame.
William and Bonnie’s enduring bond has survived career highs, personal challenges and enormous social change since they first fell in love in the early 1950s.
And even Bonnie herself seems surprised they are about to celebrate such an extraordinary milestone. “You don’t plan for it. You really don’t plan for it,” she admitted. “I’m not at all romantic or anything like that. I’m a big believer in today, you know? And then all of a sudden it’s 75 years. It’s kind of amazing, I must say.”
