Countess Cat Spencer has revealed her husband, Earl Charles Spencer, took her to see the grave of his brother at Sandringham at the weekend.
Taking to her Instagram account, the archaeologist – who married Charles in May – shared a black and white photograph of her husband.
Alongside the image, she penned: “Today, @charles.earl.spencer took me to see the grave of his brother, John Spencer, who died just after birth on January 12th 1960.
“He was buried in a quiet corner of the church of St Mary Magdalen, Sandringham, next to their grandfather. A few years ago, Charles had John’s headstone restored.
“The church is right next to Park House, where Charles and his siblings grew up.
“I loved seeing these parts of Norfolk where he had what sounds like a gloriously happy childhood!”
The heartfelt visit comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to their late grandmother, Princess Diana’s grave during a family visit to Charles’s Northamptonshire estate, Althorp, earlier this month.
In a series of photos shared from the Sussexes’ family trip to the UK, Prince Harry was photographed from behind, his adorable two children in tow. In his arms were a large bunch of flowers, the snap likely taken on the way to visiting Princess Diana’s grave.
The late Princess’ final resting place is out of bounds for any members of the public, and is situated on an island in the centre of the Oval Lake. This unique location was chosen for ultimate privacy and security as it is a place that can only be reached via boat.
The initial plan was for Diana to be buried in the family vault at the local church, but it was then thought best to be in Charles’ private residence. The lake’s bridge was also removed for another level of security.
Harry talks about his mother’s childhood home
Harry has previously spoken about the significance of Althorp, the 13,000-acre estate where Diana grew up. The prince wrote of the first time Meghan visited Diana’s grave at Althorp in his memoir, Spare.
“I led Meg up the path, around a hedge, through the labyrinth,” he recalled. “There it was, looming: the grayish white oval stone. No visit to this place was ever easy, but this one…Twenty-fifth anniversary. And Meg’s first time. At long last I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum.”
He continued: “We hesitated, hugging, and then I went first. I placed flowers on the grave. Meg gave me a moment, and I spoke to my mother in my head, told her I missed her, asked her for guidance and clarity.”
