Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow, Tenisha Hancock Warner, filed a lawsuit requesting $1.2 million in debt from the late actor’s estate, suing his mother Pamela Warner, on July 20, 2026.

Filed on the first anniversary of his death from an accidental drowning, the late star’s widow alleges that her then-husband intended to take out a life insurance policy worth $1 million, as stated in their prenuptial agreement, with her as the sole beneficiary, which apparently wasn’t seen through.

Per reports, the filing also claims other damages amounting to just over $1.2 million in total, including unpaid amounts intended to support their nine-year-old daughter.

Why is Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow suing his mother?

In a statement given to People defending the drastic decision, Tenisha shared: “For the last year, I have attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate and honor his last wishes.”

“Malcolm had every intention to provide for our nine-year-old daughter and me. He was close to finalizing a new estate plan to replace the stale plan created in 1996 when he was 26 years old, 20 years before we met and well before we gave birth to our beautiful daughter,” she continued, noting that he was “unable to do so” prior to his death.

“I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider,” Tenisha added. “Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights before any potential statute of limitations expired.”

“We thank you for your support, love and understanding as we work through this painful process while honoring Malcolm’s life on the first anniversary of his death.”

What has Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother Pamela said?

While Pamela Warner is yet to directly comment on the suit, she posted a dedication to her late son on the anniversary of his death online in which she alluded to the legal battle.

“During my year-long journey, I have discovered how cruel, evil, and greedy a human can be,” she wrote in a statement posted on Instagram. “I have also discovered the depth of love, care, concern, and support that humans are capable of.”

She concluded her lengthy message with: “Please take care of yourselves and those who you love. Let them know that they are loved. Clear up any beef you may have with your loved ones, if possible. Cleanse your spirit of negativity. We all have an expiration date. Don’t leave or let your loved one leave without them knowing that they are loved and treasured.”
