Raúl Àvila has quietly shaped one of fashion’s most photographed nights for nearly two decades. While celebrities command attention on the red carpet, Àvila is the architect behind the Met Gala experience. In addition to decorating the venue, he and his team set the tone, direct the visual narrative, and elevate fashion into a full-scale artistic environment.

Àvila’s journey begins in Bogotá, where he laid the foundation for a career in visual storytelling. After moving to the United States at a young age, he became part of the creative industries, eventually studying with legendary event planner Robert Isabell.

This mentorship was pivotal as Isabell’s influence introduced Àvila to high-profile clients, leading him to refine his approach to large-scale event production. Through this connection, Àvila met Anna Wintour, who eventually changed the trajectory of his career.

By 2007, Àvila had taken the reins of the Gala’s event design, and since then, he has consistently delivered iconic decor.

The 2026 Met Gala Theme: “Fashion is Art”

This year, Àvila is back with a concept that blends abstraction and emotion. The 2026 dress code, “Fashion is Art,” is expressive and almost museum-like. To bring this vision to life, Àvila collaborated with filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and production designer Derek McLane to approach the event as a living installation.

Their inspiration draws from Northern Italian gardens, referencing Renaissance artistry and romantic landscapes.
