David Allan Coe’s life and career spanned decades, but his final years have drawn renewed attention following his death at 86. The outlaw country star, known for hits like “Take This Job and Shove It,” faced health challenges over time and was hospitalized before his passing.

As questions remain about his cause of death, many are also looking back at his personal life, including his marriages and family. Learn more below.

Did David Allan Coe Have Health Issues?

Yes, David experienced several health issues over the years. In 2018, reports circulated that he had been hospitalized after suffering two strokes, based on a post from an unofficial website. However, members of his band later clarified that he had not suffered a stroke and that his symptoms were caused by an inner ear infection.

He also faced other health challenges later in life, including a COVID-19 hospitalization in 2021 that required oxygen treatment.

How Did David Allan Coe Die?

David  died on April 29, 2026, at the age of 86. He passed away in a hospital after spending time in intensive care, but an official cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Was David Allan Coe Married?

Yes, David was married six times. At the time of his death, he was married to his sixth wife, Kimberly Hastings Coe, who confirmed the news publicly

Kimberly told the Rolling Stone, “One of the best singers, songwriters, and performers of our time [and] never to be forgotten. My husband, my friend, my confidant and my life for many years. I’ll never forget him and I don’t want anyone else to ever forget him either.”

David’s personal life often mirrored his larger-than-life persona. He was married six times and at one point joked to  The Oklahoman, “I’m a polygamist! I’m a Mormon, I’ve got seven wives and five kids!”

Did David Allan Coe Have Children?

Yes, David had multiple children, including sons Tyler and Carson, and daughters Shelli, Carla, Tanya, and Shyanne. His son Tyler Mahan Coe became a podcaster and musician, while his daughter Tanya pursued a career in country music.
