The soccer world is mourning the loss of Alex Hughes, the son of former player and manager Mark Hughes, who has died at the age of 38. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the Welsh soccer legend in a joint statement with his wife, Jill, released through the League Managers Association. No cause of death has been disclosed.
“Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex. Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo. Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all.”

Tributes have also poured in from Grimsby Town Football Club, where Alex Hughes served as Player Recruitment Lead.
“Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is devastated to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of our Player Recruitment Lead, Alex Hughes,” the club said in a statement. The club described Hughes as “a devoted husband, proud father, beloved son, brother and friend, and a highly valued member of the Grimsby Town family.”

Working closely with David Artell and the football department, he played a key role in shaping the Club’s recruitment strategy and supporting the continued development of the men’s first team.”
Before arriving at Grimsby Town, Hughes worked in performance analysis, player recruitment, and player representation. His career included positions with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, and Morecambe, where he earned a reputation as a dedicated professional with a deep knowledge of the game.
Colleagues also remembered him for his character and warmth.

Grimsby Town extended its deepest condolences to Hughes’ wife, Jessica; his children, Sebastian and Leonardo; his parents, Mark and Jill; his brother, Curtis; his sister, Xenna; and his extended family, friends and loved ones.
They also asked for privacy as the family grieves. “The Club respectfully asks that Alex’s family’s privacy be respected as they come to terms with their loss. Rest in peace, Alex. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner.”
Born During Mark Hughes’ Barcelona Spell
Alex Hughes was born in 1987 while his father was playing for FC Barcelona. Although Mark Hughes spent only one season with the Spanish club, he enjoyed his greatest success with Manchester United and also played for Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Since 2025, he has managed Carlisle United, which competes in England’s fifth tier.
