Spain’s victory in the 2026 World Cup final sparked all kinds of reactions: on one side, euphoric celebrations from fans of “La Roja,” and on the other, the sadness and disappointment of Lionel Messi and all the supporters who were hoping to see Argentina lift its fourth World Cup trophy.

As social media filled up with every kind of comment about what had happened on the field, one post in particular drew attention because, at first glance, the author seemed to be none other than Georgina Rodríguez. As the backlash grew, the model spoke out, revealing she had been the victim of identity theft.

Last weekend, after Argentina’s defeat to Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium, a message attributed to Georgina began circulating on Facebook in which she appeared to mock the ‘Albiceleste’ loss. “Bye Bye Argentina”, read the post, which also included a couple of laughing emojis and a waving hand. As you’d expect, the post immediately generated countless reactions and was shared widely, many users possibly in disbelief over what they were seeing.

However, even though the profile photo clearly belonged to Georgina and the account had a blue verification checkmark, that controversial message did not come from the model. On July 20, Gio used her Instagram Stories to clear things up and make it clear she was not behind those words on Facebook.

“Good morning. There’s a Facebook account that’s impersonating me. I’m already in contact with the Meta team to resolve this situation as soon as possible. Thank you for always letting me know and for your support. Love you”, Georgina wrote. She didn’t need to go into detail for her followers to understand that the Facebook account she was referring to was the one behind the now-infamous comment.

The fake account, which presents itself as both an official and fan page and has more than 1.6 million followers, is still active and posting content (photos of Gio and Cristiano Ronaldo). In fact, the post about Argentina’s national team is still on its wall with numerous reactions and comments.

The idea that Georgina would mock Argentina’s loss was far-fetched to begin with, given her roots. The daughter of an Argentine father and Spanish mother, Gio was born in Buenos Aires, where her family lived for a short time after arriving. Although the model grew up in Jaca (Huesca) and has spent much of her life in Spain, she’s never denied her connection to the South American country. “I’m Latina, I’m Argentine, but I love to show my roots in classical ballet after so many years in the profession,” she said last year on Despierta América (Univision), speaking about her love of salsa, which she called “the movement of the soul.”

Cristiano Ronaldo speaks affectionately about Argentines

Earlier this month, during a press conference at the 2026 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo said he has a lot of affection for Argentines, with whom he’s been pitted as a rival for years, especially against Lionel Messi. “My wife is Argentine. Obviously I have to care for Argentines. That’s why everything’s fine, it’s all good,” the soccer star said after sharing a story about an Argentine flight attendant whose nationality he guessed from the way she looked at him. “I’m sure you’re from Argentina because of the way you looked at me. You looked at me and then turned your eyes away really fast. That means you don’t like Cristiano,” he joked.

Georgina’s fiancé Cristiano Ronaldo said goodbye to his World Cup dream on July 6, when he and Portugal’s national team were eliminated in the round of 16. The Portuguese side lost to Spain 1–0, marking the end of “El Bicho’s” World Cup career.
