The 2026 World Cup is underway, and there have been plenty of heart-racing, history-making, and proud moments for soccer lovers around the globe. As fans packed the Estadio Ciudad de Mexico for the opening game, there was a group of kids in Mexico outside for the cameras, helping build the excitement for a television crew. They were told to wear green to support El Tri, and one little boy named Santi stood out in the crowd.

Santi improvised with his Christmas sweater

Santi didn’t have a kit, so he improvised, wearing a Christmas sweater with Santa on the front, white shorts, and red boots. The photos and videos of Santi went viral, and Claro Sports embarked on a mission to find out who he was.

Once he was identified, he had a life-changing experience, and has been stealing the hearts of everyone on social media, visiting news stations, and most importantly, got his own official jersey from a player that shares his name. His video has been viewed on Instagram over 24M times.

  • Santi has since gotten hellos from multiple players on the national team, like Santiago Giménez.  The Argentine-born forward sent a special message to him with the kit, saying, “What’s up, Santi de Caio? How are you? This is Santiago Jimenez. We have the same name, and I just wanted to send you a big hug, many blessings, and I hope you like the gift. Big hug, take care.”

Claro Sports brought him into the studio wearing the now-famous Christmas sweater, where he talked about his love of sports and was presented with the jersey.  His mom said he wore the sweater because he wanted to represent the colors of Mexico.

The story resonated with the internet for many reasons. The creativity, the dedication, and the all too familiar experiences people have been had when they didn’t have the resources or means.

People started sharing their own stories, like one Instagram user who shared a hilarious memory from school, “This is what no-nonsense moms do!” “My Polish mom used to send me to school every spirit day (last Friday of the month) in a red shirt with big white letters (we were supposed to wear our school colors, red & white…). My mom sent me a MARLBORO shirt. I was 6.”

Another person shared, “How cute, made me remember when I went out to a dance in San Agustín Jal, all the girls had a white bow, my mom didn’t have to buy one, but we went to the bathroom, and she made me a bow with toilet paper.” “The most present memory I have is from when I was a child. Prom was a success, and the girls were all in awe of the toilet roll,” they continued.
