The Princess of Wales rarely steps out in a sparkly dress, but her midi style from 2019 is the sort of dress we should all be adding to our holiday wardrobes. Kate, now 44, headed out to visit the Empire Music Hall in Belfast in 2019, opting for a shimmery green Missoni dress.
The shin-skimming number featured a long-sleeved wrap top that cinched at the wrist. The skirt section was pleated to offer movement and added femininity.
A shimmering dress like this could easily be styled with wedges or sandals on a hot evening, but Kate opted for nude heels and a matching Mulberry clutch to make it appropriate for a royal outing.
Oriona Robb, a luxury stylist with over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, is certainly a fan of Kate’s look seven years on and says it is about to become trendy again. “Kate’s glittering midi dress feels like exactly the sort of fashion revival we’re about to see more of because it taps into a softer, more romantic kind of glamour,” she tells us.
Wearing sparkles the refined way
“Rather than sequins that scream partywear, this look uses shimmer in a refined, grown-up way; the pleating adds movement, the metallic finish catches light subtly, and the silhouette feels timeless rather than trend-driven. It is polished, feminine and quietly impactful, which is why it still looks fresh years later.”
Oriona says that what makes this style particularly underrated is how wearable it actually is. “We tend to reserve sparkle for festive dressing, but a dress like this works brilliantly across seasons when styled with intention,” the stylist explains. “Add knee-high boots and a tailored coat for elevated daytime dressing, switch to barely-there heels for weddings, or style it with a sharp blazer and pointed flats for a more contemporary city look.”
How to recycle a sparkly dress this summer
The stylist adds that for holiday dressing, this is exactly the kind of piece worth revisiting because it does the hard work for you. “The sparkle instantly gives a celebratory feel, but the beauty is in how easily it transforms depending on styling,” says Oriona.
“Metallic heels create elegance, velvet pumps add richness for winter evenings, while even a sleek sandal or sculptural mule can make it feel modern and fashion-forward.”
Kate still wears sparkles
More recently, Kate wore sparkles in a more formal setting, stepping out at the German State Banquet at Windsor Castle in December 2025 in a dazzling Jenny Packham moment.
The sky-blue dress featured a sequin-adorned cape and was covered in sparkles that, when paired with Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara, was the epitome of regal glamour.
