Corbin Bernsen is known to TV fans as divorce attorney Arnold Becker on the long-running NBC drama series L.A. Law, but at home he is simply dad to four sons, and husband to wife Amanda Pays.

Corbin and Amanda, a British actress who starred in the original series The Flash and now an interior designer, married in 1988, and after almost 40 years of marriage, Corbin has revealed the surprisingly simple secret that keeps their marriage going.

“The good, the bad, for better or for worse … it’s all there in the wedding vows. It’s just too easy for some people to give up,” the actor, who has returned to screens alongside Jon Hamm in Your Friends & Neighbors, has shared.

“The honeymoon period is always going to end, but if you have the love to start, if the love story is there and it’s strong enough to begin with, then you can go through the periods where you find problems with each other.”

Speaking to People magazine, Corbin revealed that together they had “stuck through the hard times”.

“But the bad times are like the stomach flu. You might feel crappy for two weeks, but you’ll barf it all out and you’re back to normal. So I think that’s what we’ve done,” he said.

In the 1990s, Corbin and Amanda began flipping homes; they sold an English country home in Beverly Hills to Steve Martin in 1995 for $3 million, and he still lives there.

Corbin and Amanda soon returned to the UK, and in 1998 spoke to HELLO! about their new home and welcoming their fourth son, Finley. They now split their time between New York’s Hudson Valley and France.

Flipping houses has remained a solid side hustle for the pair, and in the last three decades, they have renovated and sold over 35.

Their sons – Oliver, 37, twins Henry and Angus, 34, and 28-year-old Finley – are all now grown, but they have followed in their parents’ footsteps.

Oliver is a director, and Henry is a writer and actor. Angus and Finley have also both dabbled in acting, and the four also work with their parents on home renovations.

They came together to support their dad in March when the South by SouthWest festival in Austin, TX, premiered the pilot episode of his new series, The Woodstockers.

Directed by Corbin’s son Oliver and co-written with Henry, it stars Corbin, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Barbara Hershey. It follows two friends, Lenny Baker and Calvin Reddick, who attended the legendary 1969 festival and never returned to their real lives after being changed during that summer of love.

But 50 years on, “Lenny is forced to face a hard truth: the better world they once envisioned never quite arrived… and if it ever does, he won’t be around to see it. Calvin’s sudden death makes that painfully clear.”
