Fresh off the Met Gala, Lauren Sánchez Bezos is continuing her mission to inspire the next generation through aviation and STEM education. The pilot and media personality took to social media to share moments from a special day spent with high school students through the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s STEM initiative, offering them an up-close experience inside and around her helicopter.

The video posted on her Instagram account shows Sánchez Bezos alongside a group of students at an airfield, smiling as she walked them through the aircraft experience. Dressed casually in jeans, sneakers, and aviator sunglasses, she was seen seated inside the helicopter cockpit wearing a pilot headset while interacting with students eager to learn more about aviation.

Lauren Sánchez Bezos shared highlights from a day spent with high school students through the AOPA STEM aviation program.

She captioned the post: “The future of aviation. 🚁 So grateful to the @flywithaopa STEM program for the chance to spend the day with these high schoolers. Watching them around the helicopter, full of questions and possibility. This is what it’s all about.”

Sánchez Bezos has become increasingly vocal about expanding access to aviation and STEM opportunities, especially for younger generations who may not otherwise be exposed to careers in aerospace, piloting, and engineering.

The AOPA STEM program is designed to introduce students to aviation pathways through hands-on learning, exposure to flight training, and classroom resources. Programs like this have become increasingly important as the aviation industry faces a growing demand for pilots, engineers, and technical professionals over the next decade.

In 2022, HOLA! reported how, for many people, becoming a pilot seems out of reach. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5.6% of pilots are women, and 6% are people of color. Unbelievably, earning a commercial pilot’s license in the U.S. can cost about $100,000.

In addition, becoming an Airline Transport Pilot requires 1,500 hours of flight time, making these requirements a commitment hard to fulfill.

Expanding Access to Aviation

Throughout the visit, the students appeared engaged and excited as they toured the helicopter, asked questions, and posed for group photos with Sánchez Bezos. One image showed her sitting at the open helicopter doorway beside the students.

Sánchez Bezos has long held a passion for flying. She is a licensed helicopter pilot and has frequently spoken about how aviation changed her perspective and confidence. In recent years, she has used her platform to advocate for greater inclusion in aerospace and to encourage more women and young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Social media users praised the initiative, with many applauding the emphasis on mentorship. “Love this, especially for girls who remain a small minority in aviation,” a person wrote.  “I got my helicopter license years ago. My dream was to own a female aviation company. I love this for young students. Barrier to entry is a problem. R44 or R22 are a come start,” another added.

In 2024, Lauren received the Elling Halvorson Vertical Flight Hall of Fame Award from the Living Legends of Aviation. The founder of Black Ops Aviation was honored alongside 100 other individuals for their remarkable achievements in aviation and aerospace.

The former pop news reporter and news anchor founded Black Ops Aviation, an aerial film company, where she now serves as CEO and helicopter pilot.
