Mangione’s arrest has gripped the nation after he was identified as a suspect in Brian Thompson’s murder.
Luigi Mangione was arrested and charged in connection to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year. Mangione, then a 27-year-old engineer and Ivy League graduate, was found carrying a ghost gun and fake IDs in Altoona, Pennsylvania, less than a week after Thompson was shot in New York City in early December 2024.
The case has gripped the nation, with many speculating about the possible motive behind killing Thompson. Mangione comes from a wealthy Maryland family, and some of his former friends and classmates expressed their shock over his arrest in television interviews.
Mangione later pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges tied to Thompson’s death. In January 2026, a federal judge dismissed murder and weapons charges that could have made Mangione eligible for the death penalty, though he still faces several serious remaining charges, including second-degree murder and multiple weapons-related offenses. Then, in May 2026, a New York judge ruled that some evidence recovered from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest could not be introduced at trial because the initial search was unlawful. However, prosecutors will still be allowed to use other key evidence, including a gun, silencer and notebook recovered during a later police station search. His state trial is currently scheduled to begin in September 2026.
