Melania Trump is famously private, but she’s never been afraid to set the record straight. Over the years, Melania has answered many questions regarding her marriage ot Donald Trump, with whom she shares one son, Barron. The couple met when she was 28 years old, having a 24-year age gap with Trump, who was 52 at the time.
The union and Trump’s notoriety sparked speculation about her real motives and the marriage itself. In a 1999 interview with ABC News, shortly after the couple went public with their relationship, journalist Don Dahler asked Melania about the romance. He gave her the chance to respond to the critics who said she was with Trump for his money.
“People don’t know me,” she said. “People who talk like this don’t know me.”
“Well, it’s not every day you see a 26-year-old supermodel on the arm of a 53-year-old car mechanic,” Dahler said.
The question inspired one of Melania’s most impassioned responses in record. “You know what? You cannot sleep, or hug, or have a conversation with beautiful things, with a beautiful apartment, a beautiful plane, beautiful cars, or beautiful houses. You can’t do that,” she said.
“You could feel very empty,” Melania continued. “And if somebody said, ‘You’re with the man because he’s rich and famous,’ they don’t know me.”

Ever since Melania became First Lady, she’s inspired many questions and intrigue. Despite having published a memoir and a documentary following her life as she prepared to live in the White House once more, people know very little about her. Some tidbits have been collected over the years. As one of two foreign-born First Ladies and the first to become a citizen through Naturalization, Melania has redefined what the role means.
She’s differed in key ways from her counterparts, moving to the White House some time after Trump was already living there, opting to stay behind in Manhattan so Barron could finish out the school year.
Most recently, it was revealed that she renegotiated her prenup with Trump several times ahead of his second term as president. She’s spoken about her independence on various occasions. “Some people may just see me as the president’s wife,” she said in a 2025 interview with Fox News. “But I stand on my own; I’m independent. I have my own ideas, my own yeses and nos. I don’t always agree with what my husband says or does, and that’s okay.”

In that 1999 interview, she was asked whether she could ever picture herself as first lady. “Yes. I would be very traditional, like Jackie Kennedy. I would support him and take on a lot of social obligations,” she said.
Through her years as First Lady, she’s met some criticism due to her low public profile and apparent limited involvement in politics. “I give him my advice, and sometimes he listens, and sometimes he doesn’t. And that’s okay,” she said of her dynamic with Trump, in an interview with Fox & Friends.
“I feel like I was always myself, even the first time around in the White House.”
