Melania Trump’s surprising LGBTQ statement sparks mixed reactions after Supreme Court ruling on trans athletes

Melania Trump is once again making headlines after sharing a rare political statement that reaffirmed her support for the LGBTQIA+ community while also celebrating a landmark Supreme Court ruling allowing states to bar transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

The First Lady posted the message on X on Tuesday, June 30, shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 6-3 decision in two closely watched cases involving laws in West Virginia and Idaho. 

While her husband, President Donald Trump, praised the ruling as a major victory, Melania struck a more nuanced tone by emphasizing what she described as two values that can coexist.

Quoting a passage from her 2024 memoir, Melania, the First Lady wrote:

“As many of you may know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community. But we must also ensure that our female athletes are protected and respected.”

She went on to reference the Supreme Court’s decision, writing that the nation’s highest court had concluded schools may preserve girls’ and women’s sports for biological females under Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause.

Melania added that the United States can both support LGBTQIA+ rights and protect opportunities for female athletes. “Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair,” she concluded. “Both ideals are essential.”

The Supreme Court ruling:

The First Lady’s comments came after the Supreme Court upheld state laws in West Virginia and Idaho that prohibit transgender girls and women from competing on school sports teams consistent with their gender identity.

Writing for the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh concluded that schools may determine athletic eligibility based on biological sex under Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause.

President Donald Trump backed the decision on Truth Social, calling it a “BIG WIN” and describing it as a victory for women’s sports.

A mixed reaction online:

Melania Trump’s attempt to balance support for LGBTQIA+ rights with support for the court’s decision quickly generated criticism from multiple sides of the political spectrum.

Some LGBTQIA+ advocates argued that expressing support for the community while endorsing a ruling that limits participation for transgender athletes sends conflicting messages. Others pointed to her previous association with the Log Cabin Republicans, an LGBTQ conservative organization for which she has appeared at fundraising events.

At the same time, some conservative commentators and members of President Trump’s political base criticized the First Lady for publicly expressing support for the broader LGBTQIA+ community, arguing that the statement was unnecessary.

Although Melania Trump has rarely spoken independently on LGBTQIA+ issues, she has made several public statements over the years.

In her 2024 memoir, she wrote that she “fully supports the LGBTQIA+ community” while arguing that transgender participation in women’s sports raises fairness concerns because of what she described as biological differences between male and female athletes.

That same year, she hosted a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Republicans at Mar-a-Lago, where she praised the group and said her husband was “the most pro-gay president in American history.”

During the 2020 presidential campaign, she also appeared in a campaign video defending Donald Trump against accusations of being anti-LGBTQ, saying he “sees potential in everyone he meets, no matter their gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.” She also noted that he was the first U.S. president to enter office already supporting same-sex marriage. 

Despite those statements, LGBTQ advocacy organizations have frequently argued that her expressions of personal support conflict with several LGBTQ-related policies implemented during the Trump administration, including restrictions affecting transgender military service and the rollback of certain federal protections for transgender Americans.
