Mike Myers sparked a wave of surprise among fans this week after stepping out for a rare public appearance that left many doing a double take.
The Austin Powers star attended the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto on Sunday, where he was honoured with the prestigious Academy Icon Award.
But while the evening celebrated his remarkable contribution to entertainment, it was his dramatically different appearance that quickly became a talking point online.
Appearing on the red carpet at the CBC Broadcast Centre, the 62-year-old actor looked dapper in a classic black suit, white shirt and dark tie. Sporting closely cropped silver hair and a noticeably more mature look, Mike appeared almost unrecognisable to some fans, who flooded social media with comparisons to fellow comedy legend Steve Martin.
“I thought it was Steve Martin at first glance,” one fan wrote on X. Another added: “When did Mike Myers become Steve Martin?” A third joked: “Same guy, just aged.”
Others noted that the beloved Canadian comedian’s silver-haired look was a far cry from the energetic characters that made him a household name, including Wayne Campbell in Wayne’s World, the groovy secret agent Austin Powers and the voice of Shrek.
“Mike Myers looks completely different now. Aging hit him hard, white hair and all,” one social media user commented. “Fans saying he looks like Steve Martin or Baz Luhrmann. Time really changes everyone.” Some online commenters speculated about whether cosmetic procedures could have contributed to the change in his appearance, while others pointed out that the transformation was simply a reflection of the passing years.
Despite the fan debate, Mike appeared relaxed and in good spirits as he accepted one of the highest honours of his career.
The Canadian Academy presented him with the Academy Icon Award in recognition of his extraordinary impact on film, television and comedy over several decades. The emotional star became visibly moved as he took to the stage. “I had a whole speech written about how much I love Canada, but I suspect some of you might be sick of hearing that at this point,” he told the audience.
At one stage, Mike fought back tears as he paid tribute to his late parents. He thanked them “for moving to Canada and stressing the importance of being silly.” The heartfelt moment resonated with attendees as the actor reflected on the country that helped shape his career. “I just want to say, Canada, I don’t know what to say, dude,” he continued. “I’d just really be nothing without you.”
The Academy later celebrated the moment on social media, describing Mike as a “legend” and praising his contribution to Canadian entertainment.
The honour comes during a period of renewed public visibility for the actor, who recently made headlines for popularising the phrase “Elbows up” as a patriotic response to comments made by US President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of annexing Canada.
While Mike has largely kept a low profile in recent years, he remains one of Canada’s most beloved entertainment exports. After getting his start on Saturday Night Live, he became a global superstar thanks to blockbuster franchises including Wayne’s World, Austin Powers and Shrek, generating billions at the worldwide box office.
Today, a new generation of fans knows him as the voice behind the lovable green ogre, while older audiences continue to cherish his unforgettable comedy creations. Mike has also returned to the big screen recently and can currently be seen in the highly anticipated Michael biopic, portraying music executive Walter Yetnikoff.
The actor’s appearance at the Canadian Screen Awards follows another rare red carpet outing in April, when he attended the premiere of Michael in Los Angeles alongside his wife, Kelly Tisdale. The couple, who married in 2010, share three children: son Spike, 14, and daughters Sunday, 12, and Paulina, 10.
