Queen Máxima will officially open WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 on July 25, marking a historic milestone for the Dutch monarchy.

While members of royal families have previously expressed support for LGBTQIA+ communities, no reigning queen has publicly inaugurated WorldPride in an official capacity.

The appearance carries additional significance as Amsterdam hosts WorldPride for the first time in its history.

The international event will run from July 25 through August 8, 2026, celebrating the city’s long-standing commitment to equality while commemorating the 25th anniversary of the world’s first legal same-sex marriages, which took place in the Netherlands in 2001.

The Royal House’s announcement:

Queen Máxima’s upcoming WorldPride engagement reflects the Dutch monarchy’s continued support for diversity and inclusion.

The program includes the Pride Walk, Canal Parade, Human Rights Conference and several cultural events across Amsterdam.

Queen Máxima’s visit will begin in Pride Park, where she is scheduled to meet young participants, athletes and community representatives before officially inaugurating the festival, reinforcing the Netherlands’ longstanding reputation as one of the world’s most progressive countries on LGBTQIA+ rights.

Why the moment matters:

Although Queen Máxima has previously championed inclusion and anti-discrimination through her public work, this will mark her first official participation in a Pride celebration as queen.

With the engagement confirmed directly by the Dutch Royal House, the appearance is already being viewed as a landmark moment for both the Dutch monarchy and modern European royalty.
