The 10 chicest pieces under £300 I’m shopping this May from M&S, Cos, Zara and more

Summer is finally on the horizon – hooray! But in typical British weather fashion, the temperature this month is up and down like a yo-yo. The key to looking good with zero outfit stress? Layering.

Shopping for easy, versatile pieces that can be changed instantly is the smartest way to navigate those unpredictable in-between days – think lightweight knits and breezy staples that work just as well in sunshine as they do under a jacket.

May is the perfect time to shop luxe for less – the majority of high street brands drop their late spring, pre-summer, or summer collections around this time, meaning you get first pick of the freshest pieces before they inevitably sell out. And with layering in mind in these collections, it’s also, in my opinion, when the balance of trend-led buys and timeless staples is at its strongest.

For example, H&M has just launched its Studio Resort 2026 collection, an ode to the South of France; River Island has a stunning collaboration with Latin-Australian brand Del Maar; and accessories brand Charles & Keith has launched its whimsical ‘pastel moments for summer’ collection.

From elevated basics to versatile trend-led must-haves, these are the high street finds I’m shopping this May.

  • Zw Collection Frayed Peplum Top

    Zara

This top is effortlessly chic with its peplum silhouette and contrasting ties. Pair with your favourite pair of jeans and some ballet flats for an elegant daytime look.

    Handkerchief A-line dress

    Mango

Handkerchiefs at the midriff is this season’s cool-girl-approved accessories trend, and Mango have done the hard work for us by incorporating it into an elegant midi dress.

    Mina Straw Cupro Lace Top

    Diish

If you’re looking for something effortlessly elevated and elegant, Australian brands are the way to go. I’m obsessed with this satin cami with the contrasting black lace trim. So chic.

    Leather Wedge Flip-Flop Sandals

    Arket

Last year, a classic pair of flip flops became the footwear moment nobody expected, with fashionistas pairing them with outfits for every occasion – and this trend is showing no signs of slowing down for SS26. I love this wedged version from Arket, giving them an air of 90s-infused sophistication for moments that call for a more refined dress code.

Black Lace Trim Stud Belt Shorts

    River Island

Everybody needs a pair of black shorts for summer, and I love that this pair also come with a studded black belt to elevate them into something that can be worth both day and night.

Oceana Nude Glitter Jelly Sling Back Sandals

    Linzi

By now, you’ve probably noticed that jelly shoes this season are no longer for kids on the beach. Chloe and Dior are just a few high-end brands that have released elevated iterations for this summer. I own this pair from Linzi and can attest to their comfort and versatility. And for less than £20? an absolute bargain.

Pleated Balloon Fit Linen Blend Trousers

    Massimo Dutti

The balloon silhouette trousers are slightly Marmite-y: you either love them or you hate them. I’m the former, because I prefer wearing long-length over mini, which can be tricky for the summer. These trousers are lightweight, airy, and, perhaps most importantly, on trend this season.

Mini Lyla Tubular Tote Bag – Pink

    Charles & Keith

I’m not opposed to a pop of colour, but I opt for neutrals in the summer. The pastel accessories from Charles & Keith are perfect for incorporating a subtle touch of fun this season.

    Twist-Detail Jersey Top

    Cos

I love to have a selection of classic, minimalistic tops in my wardrobe to throw on with absolutely anything when I can’t be bothered to think about an outfit. I love the elegant twist at the waist for added interest.

    Linen Rich High Waisted Shorts

    Marks & Spencer

I’m obsessed with M&S’s summer collection, and these easy-breezy shorts are going straight into my basket.
