It was a decade filled with time-travelling teens, adventure-seeking archaeologists and ghost-busting scientists that remain cult classic figures today.
In this nostalgic year-by-year round-up, we revisit the standout 80s film from the year you were born and check in on the stars who defined them – from Hollywood legends still lighting up the screen to those who have quietly slipped away from the spotlight.
The Shining (1980)
Stanley Kubrick’s unsettling hotel-set horror, based on Stephen King’s iconic 1977 novel, follows a writer’s terrifying descent into madness, with Jack Nicholson delivering one of the most memorable performances of his career as Jack Torrance. Now largely retired from acting, the 89-year-old Oscar winner has kept a low profile in recent years, enjoying a quieter life away from Hollywood.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
© DisneyDirected by Steven Spielberg, Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced cinema audiences to Harrison Ford’s whip-cracking archaeologist Indiana Jones as he raced against Nazi forces to recover the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. More than four decades later, Harrison, 83, remains one of Hollywood’s busiest stars, recently appearing in Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking opposite Jason Segel.
Blade Runner (1982)

Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, starred Harrison Ford as retired blade runner Rick Deckard, tasked with hunting down rogue synthetic humans known as replicants. Rutger Hauer delivered a career-defining turn as Roy Batty and continued acting for decades before sadly passing away in 2019 following a short illness.
Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, the movie remains one of the most talked-about in the franchise. While Mark and Harrison are continuing their work in the entertainment industry, Carrie sadly passed away in 2016, with many people flooding to pay tribute to the Princess Leia actress.
Ghostbusters (1984)
Few films capture the spirit of 1980s supernatural comedy quite like Ghostbusters. Directed by Ivan Reitman and written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, the movie follows a team of eccentric ghost hunters navigating paranormal chaos in New York City. Bill, 75, and Dan, 73, remain active in film and TV, while Harold passed away in 2014.
Back to the Future (1985)

Starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the movie follows Marty McFly, a teenager who accidentally gets sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean built by Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown. Michael J. Fox, now 64, has largely retired from acting due to Parkinson’s disease, while Christopher Lloyd, now 87, continues to build on his impressive list of acting credits.
Aliens (1986)
© Alamy Stock PhotoFollowing Alien, which premiered in 1979, James Cameron’s legendary sci-fi action sequel sees Sigourney Weaver resurface as Ellen Ripley after 57 years in hyper-sleep – only to be faced with hundreds of deadly xenomorphs. Now 76, Sigourney continues to dominate the sci-fi franchise by playing Dr Grace Augustine in the Avatar movies.
Fatal Attraction (1987)

Michael, 81, still dips a toe into acting now and again while spending time between New York and Spain. Meanwhile, Glenn, 79, is booked and busy, having starred in Disney+’s All’s Fair and playing Drusilla Sickle in the upcoming movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Die Hard (1988)
© SkyIs it a Christmas movie or not? Wherever you fall in the long-running debate, Die Hard is the high-stakes action classic set in a skyscraper under siege, starring Bruce Willis as John McClane opposite Alan Rickman’s sinister Hans Gruber. Bruce, 71, is adjusting to life in LA with advanced frontotemporal dementia, while Alan sadly passed away in 2016, leaving a beloved legacy behind.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

Rick Moranis stars as Wayne Szalinksi, and while he largely retired from on-screen work in the 1990s to spend more time with his children, the 73-year-old is set to reprise his role as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs: The New One.
