The mother and pageant rookie crowned Miss Puerto Rico 2026

On June 25, 2026, Puerto Rico inaugurated its newest titleholder. Representing San Sebastián, Jennifer Barreto secured the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2026 crown at the Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas, concluding a journey of several months of preparation.

In a competition centered on the theme “Legacy,” Barreto distinguished herself among 35 participants to succeed Zashely Alicea. Her win is uniquely timed, as Puerto Rico is set to host the 75th Miss Universe pageant this November at San Juan’s Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot.

Taking on the mantle of the national champion, Barreto will represent the island and serve as the official host delegate for international representatives during the global competition.

As the national winner, Barreto will not only represent Puerto Rico but also serve as the host country’s representative, welcoming delegates from around the world. 

Who Is Miss Puerto Rico, Jennifer Barreto?

At 27 years old, Jennifer Barreto brings an impressive resume that extends far beyond pageantry. She is married and the proud mother of 7-year-old Penélope, making her one of the few recent Miss Universe Puerto Rico winners balancing motherhood with a demanding professional career.

Academically, Barreto holds two master’s degrees, one in Psychology and another in Clinical Social Work. Her education has shaped a career focused on helping others through prevention and intervention.

As reported by Listin Diario, she professionally, she serves as a Prevention Specialist for the U.S. Army Department of Defense, where she develops strategies aimed at preventing harmful behaviors and promoting healthier communities.

Away from work, she enjoys reading and volleyball while remaining actively involved in volunteer work throughout Puerto Rico.

Community Service Is at the Center of Her Mission

Barreto has consistently emphasized that service is her greatest purpose. She volunteers with the Pediatric Diabetes Association of Puerto Rico, supporting children and families affected by diabetes while advocating for greater awareness.

Rather than viewing pageantry as a career opportunity, Barreto has repeatedly described Miss Universe Puerto Rico as another platform to amplify her mission of making a positive difference.

Known on social media as “La Barreto,” she says she believes women can confidently embrace both their femininity and their leadership abilities. She credits discipline, service, and authenticity as the principles that define her life.

No Previous Pageant Experience

One of the most remarkable aspects of Barreto’s victory is that she entered Miss Universe Puerto Rico without prior pageant experience. Despite being a newcomer, she quickly emerged as one of the strongest contenders throughout the competition thanks to her communication skills, confidence, education, and authentic life story.

After winning the title, she took to social media to share a love letter to her island: “My beloved Puerto Rico,

The Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2026 Finale

The Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2026 finale celebrated the organization’s legacy while showcasing Puerto Rican entertainment. The evening opened with a performance by the Camerata Coral de Puerto Rico before Elvis Crespo energized the audience with several of his biggest hits. Later in the competition, Ken-Y performed during the evening gown segment.

Contestants modeled custom evening gowns designed by Jaer Cabán before returning in swimwear from Gabriela Berlingeri‘s fashion brand, Diciembre Veintinueve.

The judging panel included Olga Tañón, Ángela Meyer, Astrid Rivera, Damaris Díaz, Sylvia Verónica Camacho, Emilio Olabarrieta, and Dr. Orlando Cañizares.

Miss Puerto Rico Final Results

Jennifer Barreto claimed the national crown after defeating 34 other contestants.

The final placements included:

1. Winner: Jennifer Barreto (San Sebastián)
2. First runner-up: Génesis Dávila (Arroyo)
3. Second runner-up: Vivianie Díaz-Arroyo (Aguas Buenas)

During the ceremony, Génesis Dávila also received the “Mujer de Valor” award, presented in partnership with L’Oréal Paris, recognizing the contestant with the strongest commitment to community service.

As Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2026, Barreto received an extensive prize package to support her year-long reign.
