Today‘s Craig Melvin came close to a wardrobe malfunction on-air. The morning news anchor arrived to work on Tuesday, June 30 in an adjusted wardrobe due to the intense heat in New York City.

“Hot,” Craig, 47, said to start off Today’s Third Hour. “By the way, not just hot day, hot days.”

“How are you holding up?” his co-anchor Dylan Dreyer asked, to which Craig responded: “I hate it.” Longtime meteorologist and Today anchor Al Roker chimed in: “We’re taking an over under on July 4, at what time will Craig spontaneously combust.”

The anchor responded to Al’s bet, saying: “I just adjusted my wardrobe this morning based on the temperature.” The 71-year-old meteorologist joked: “Craig will not be wearing pants on July 4th,” with Craig jokingly adding: “The founders would understand.”

Inside the Fourth of July heatwave

While Craig may have been the only anchor on the Third Hour to share his reservations about the heatwave, Dylan explained that 170 million Americans were under some sort of heat advisory this morning, with temperatures expected to rise through the holiday weekend.

Al added that over 100 cities across the United States could set heat records over the Fourth of July weekend.

“With the combination of high humidity, heat indices may reach 100-110 Degrees,” said the National Weather Service. “Much of the central and eastern U.S. is under a Moderate to Major HeatRisk, which can pose health impacts on those without hydration or cooling.”

The heatwave impacting millions of Americans is being driven by a heat dome, which occurs when a very hot air mass parks itself over a region and gets trapped under a “lid” above the Earth’s surface.

It’s been over 14 years since New York City’s last 100 degree day. But the metropolitan area could see temperatures over 100 as America marks its 250th year as a nation.

Craig Melvin and Al Roker’s friendship

Craig may have been teased by Al for how much he despises the heat, but the two anchors have a longstanding and loving friendship. Throughout their time together on Today, Al and Craig have really bonded.

“Some of my darkest moments, personally, it’s been Roker who’s called first to check on me, check on my family,” Craig told People in August 2024. “He got a text message this morning from my parents wishing him a happy birthday.”

Craig went on, sharing that Al was the first person at Today who made him feel welcomed.

“You know what? It started, I was new to the show,” he said. “And the Today show is a very, it’s a delicate ecosystem. It’s been around for more than 70 years. It’s an American institution. The inner circle is tight and guarded. They had invited me into the inner circle, and [Al] was the first one to welcome me with open arms.”
