Lionel Messi has a new fan. In a new promo for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Tom Holland excitedly meets Messi, taking him on a webslinging ride.
The promo capitalizes on two major cultural moments: the release of the new Spider-Man film and the World Cup, which is taking place in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The spot shows Holland seated at a coffee place, running into Messi, who appears to be looking for the real Spider-Man. While Holland speaks in English, Messi speaks in Spanish, resulting in some funny exchanges. Spider-Man then appears, asking Messi if he’s afraid of heights. Messi doesn’t understand him and ends up on a web-slinging ride through New York, screaming with fear.
Messi’s appearance serves as a bridge between a large international audience who may not have the new Spider-Man film on their radars. It also reasserts just how universal Messi is, especially in the past couple of years, when he settled in the US and started to get involved with numerous notorious campaigns positioning him as the biggest athlete in the world.
What’s the new Spider-Man about?
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is one of the most anticipated films of the year, marking the return of Holland as Peter Parker. The film follows the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” released in 2021. The film became the first movie to be released during the COVID-19 pandemic and crossed the $1 billion global mark. It’s also the highest-grossing film released by Sony Pictures.
Its debut made it the second-biggest domestic opening weekend in history, behind “Avengers: Endgame,” which also stars Tom Holland.
The story follows Peter in a new stage in his life, older, and in a world that doesn’t remember him and his sacrifices. Making matters worse, his girlfriend and his best friend also don’t remember him, leaving him totally alone for the first time in the franchise. The film co-stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Mando.
