It’s always epic seeing famous athletes’ children follow in their footsteps – especially when they start outscoring them. Shaq and Shaunie Henderson’s daughter Me’Arah O’Neal is a 19-year-old University of Florida guard who’s quickly building a name for herself beyond her family legacy.

While the last name comes with expectations and people ready to drop the “nepo baby” title, she’s determined to carve her own path – and she’s doing it. “It’s a blessing, but it also comes with responsibility,” the sophomore told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m focused on really trying to create my own path… I want people to respect my name for who I am while still honoring the family legacy.” Learn more about the baller below.

Standing at 6’4, at the 2026 SEC tournament, the forward dropped 22 points to lead the Florida Gators to a major win, officially surpassing her dad’s personal best of 16 points in SEC play.

Her brother Shareef O’Neal didn’t hold back, calling her “the best hooper in the family.”

Her road to college basketball

Born on May 1, 2006, in Houston, she’s been around the game basically her entire life. She began learning from her older siblings and knew how to dribble by the time she was 3, per ESPN.

Me’Arah is the youngest daughter of Shaq and Shaunie and grew up with Shareef, Shaqir, and Amirah. She also has two half-siblings, Myles, who Shaq welcomed from a previous relationship, and Taahirah from his ex-girlfriend Arnetta Yardbourgh.

The athlete played for Episcopal High School and the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League with the CyFair Elite basketball club before making the big decision of where to go to college.

She visited LSU with her father, where he broke school records and earned the title of 1991 Associated Press National Player of the Year. While he admitted it was one of the best moments of his life, taking her on campus and everyone knowing who she was, he said he tried to stay out of the decision. “What I did tell her is, ‘Go where you’re needed, not where you’re wanted. Because if you go where you’re wanted and they have other people like you, may take a while.’ I want [my kids] to have their own journey, have their own experience.”

After visiting Florida, she decided not to choose her dad’s alma mater. “I had a feeling that’s where I belonged. And that I was going to be most successful if I went to play at Florida,” the Gator said per ESPN.

It was her connection with her coach, Kelly Rae Finley, that sealed the deal. “I felt like I connected with Coach Kelly more than I connected with any of the other schools that recruited me. She really cares about me, not just on the court but off the court. That’s important for me,” she explained.

She’s thinking outside basketball

Like a lot of her generation, Me’Arah isn’t limiting herself to just one lane. She has over 200k followers on Instagram at the time of this publication, where she shares moments from her life and accomplishments. Last week, she revealed that she signed with LIFT Management, looking to expand into brand partnerships and opportunities beyond the court.

“Alignment and authenticity… it has to make sense, fit who I am and the image I’m trying to build,” she told The Hollywood Reporter of the deals she’s interested in.

Her likeness is even being used for Gen 9 NBA 2K26.
