Why Taylor Swift’s wedding feels more like a royal wedding than anything else

During my four years at HELLO!, working alongside seasoned royal reporters has taught me that only a select few occasions can whip the entire newsroom into a genuine frenzy.

Royal weddings are one. Funerals and Coronations a close second. These events require weeks of planning meetings, the US team dialling in to sort a content plan, and extra team members called in to work to make sure we don’t miss a single moment.

So, why exactly am I invoking palace protocols in an article about Taylor Swift? Because the buzz surrounding Taylor and Travis Kelce’s wedding, reportedly taking place this weekend, is just as big as any royal wedding I’ve covered since working here.

For me, someone who edited HELLO!’s bookazine on Taylor Swift in 2024 and has been a fan for two decades, the musician’s wedding is akin to a royal wedding – and I’m not alone in feeling this way.

The most royal non-royal wedding

Wedding expert Zoe Burke of Bridebook agrees, telling HELLO!: “This wedding definitely feels more like a royal wedding than just another celebrity do, and truthfully, it has all the same ingredients: a couple the public has followed for years, a location shrouded in secrecy until the last possible second, and a sense that this moment belongs to everyone, not just the two people getting married.

“Madison Square Garden hosting it only adds to the royal wedding vibes. It’s not some private estate tucked away from view, it’s the most famous arena in the world, in the middle of Manhattan. That’s a very deliberate choice, and it tells you they know this is as much a cultural event as a personal one.

“We see the same thing with royal weddings – the balcony kiss, the crowds outside the Abbey, the glimpses of arrivals in fancy cars. This is a modern version of that fairytale, and something both Princess Kate and Meghan Markle were able to nail themselves: a gorgeous wedding as a shared public moment, not just a private one.”

Why do we care so much about Taylor Swift’s wedding?

I haven’t been anywhere this week (the gym, work events, dinners with friends), where Taylor’s wedding hasn’t been a topic of conversation – why are we so invested? Partly due to fans (and non-fans, to some extent), having a parasocial relationship with the musician.

“Taylor Swift fan or not, the world has watched this Love Story play out in real time – from the friendship bracelets at Chiefs games to the Eras Tour cameos, so by the time the star crossed lovers actually say ‘I do’, we all feel like invested guests who’ve been along for the whole ride, not just observers in some weird parasocial relationship,” says Zoe.

Taylor Swift’s wedding is of major interest to fans

“Even though Taylor is a billionaire, she still somehow feels like your best mate from school – the one who falls hard, gets the ick, and writes a banging break-up album about it. That’s rare at her level of fame, and it’s exactly why this wedding lands so differently to other celebrity weddings.

“We’re not watching a distant pop icon get married; we’re watching someone we feel like we’ve grown up alongside finally get her happy ending.

“She’s spent nearly two decades being brutally honest about heartbreak, so there’s something genuinely satisfying about seeing the story land somewhere good. It’s less ‘celebrity wedding’ and more ‘we did it, girlies!'”

The Taylor effect – and the royal link

The fan adoration of Taylor means many of us want to emulate Taylor in the same way that the public wants to copy everything Princess Kate wears – known as The Kate Effect, which sees anything she wears fly off the shelves.

I predict the Taylor effect will take place after her wedding. Whoever designs her dress will see an uptick in interest, however she wears her hair, endless brides will copy. The same goes for her wedding makeup.

Rumours are abound about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift already being married

The final royal connection? Rumours are rife that Taylor and Travis are already married – much like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who got married before their big public wedding. They had a private, intimate ceremony away from the eyes of the world, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor and Travis have done the same.

While their wedding won’t be televised like a royal wedding, I can guarantee that if it was, viewer figures would be huge – and I’m fairly sure it will all have been documented for a Disney+ film, with Taylor keeping it in her back pocket. I, for one, will be tuning in if it’s ever released. Long live the Queen (of pop).
