A rare glimpse into the domestic life of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William suggests that modern royalty may be more relatable than often assumed.

Widely regarded as a model of composure, elegance, and precision in public life, the Princess of Wales has maintained a near-flawless reputation since her engagement in 2010.

The Princess’s relationship with technology extends beyond distraction. She has publicly expressed reservations about excessive screen use, particularly in relation to children.

Her consistency in fulfilling royal duties has reinforced an image of refinement. Yet, accounts from those who have interacted with her in more informal settings point to familiar, everyday traits.

In an interview with The Times, broadcaster and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher shared an anecdote from 2020, when the Princess appeared on her podcast to discuss parenting.

The Prince of Wales confirmed that none of their children currently have mobile phones, noting that the family maintains strict guidelines around technology use.

Fletcher recalled that the Princess described herself as notably forgetful with her mobile phone, frequently misplacing it. According to Fletcher, this tendency had become such a running theme that many of the Princess’s Christmas gifts that year were chosen with the aim of helping her keep track of her device.

This habit may have become more noticeable following the family’s move to a larger residence, offering more space in which personal belongings can be misplaced.

The change in residence reflects a broader adjustment in the family’s domestic arrangements, though it also underscores the ordinary challenges that persist regardless of status.

Fletcher recalled that the Princess described herself as notably forgetful with her mobile phone, frequently misplacing it.

In 2025, she authored an essay titled The Power of Human Connection in a Distracted World, in collaboration with Robert Waldinger of Harvard Medical School. In it, she argued that while digital devices promise connection, they often disrupt meaningful interpersonal interaction. She emphasized that divided attention during conversations or family time can diminish the quality of human connection.

This perspective is reflected in the household practices of the Prince and Princess of Wales. They have taken a firm stance on limiting screen exposure for their children, Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales, and Prince Louis of Wales.

These details present a portrait of a royal household that, despite its public role, navigates many of the same habits and decisions found in everyday family life.
